Definitions
- the present invention relates to a pallet of the kind that comprises an upper carrier surface which is built preferably of a hollow structured sheet material folded to a box construction encasing a core of rigid foam, such as polystyrene or polyurethane e.g. polyurethane foam, and in the carrier surface lock bars are inserted to which the legs of the pallet are connected.
- the invention relates in particular to a pallet which has a low net weight compared to conventional wooden pallets.
- a pallet of this type is known from EP-A1-0 595 612, where the carrier surface of the pallet is built of a multiple of elements which consists of a hollow structured sheet material and a layer of rigid foam material being substantially encased in the hollow structured sheet, which at some places is welded, where said foam material can be ten times thicker than the hollow structured sheet material, and where the carrier surface of the pallet at its under side comprises a number of assembly holes in rows and in which the legs of the pallet are inserted and maintained with bracing means, preferably profile bars inserted into the carrier surface and where at least each leg is joined to one another by these bracing means which are welded to the hollow structured sheet material in order to combine the individual elements of the carrier surface to each other, as the legs at the respective rows at the lower ends are connected to a slide member which form the base of the pallet, which seen in a cross-sectional view consists of a head portion and a neck which is narrower than the head portion and in the lower portion of the legs is provided with slots which are open towards the bottom of
- the purpose of the present invention is to provide a pallet which in its basic form is simple to assemble and which in a strengthened version is capable of absorbing higher loadings and impacts than the above described pallet.
- the pallet is intended to be made in different variants which relate to the price of the pallet, its load carrying ability and other relevant parameters, which for example can pertain the suitability of the pallet for use in environments, where hygienic demands are present.
- the support elements can furthermore be joined together by edges surrounding profiles, preferably of polymeric material and covering the main part of the circumference of the pallet an in the outer edges of said profiles one or more horizontal channels are made, in which one or more flat tapes can be received for surrounding and tying the pallet together.
- Said pallet is furthermore characteristic in that the lock bars are hollow profiles which at the insertion end comprises an insertion wedge that simplifies the insertion o said bars.
- the carrier surface of the pallet is held together by a light metal angl section profile provided along the entire circumference of the edge, and where the lock bars that hold the legs of the pallet and extend through the carrier surface are open at both ends.
- one or more flat tapes are inserted through the opening of the lock bar and surround the pallet on two or more sections.
- the side edges of the carrier surface are behind the hollow structured sheet material for absorbing impacts reinforced with sheets of hard plastic, such as polystyrene.
- said pallet is in a further embodiment of the invention provided with a number of U-profiles according to the expected load transversing and inserted in the carrier surface, said U-profiles being fixed to the side reinforced polystyrene sheets on the long side of the pallet and having the opening horizontally orientated and in the vertical sheet section comprising apertures in which the longitudinal lock bars can be inserted, as the lock bars and the U-profiles together create a sort of reinforcement grit incorporated in the carrier surface of the pallet.
- the legs are fixed to the carrier surface in a quite normal manner with the before mentioned lock bars that extend through the lock apertures in the upper section of the legs.
- the pallet according to the invention comprises furthermore feet extending in the entire length of the pallet and fixed to the legs, said feet being characteristic in that they are built of a triangular profile, preferably of a polymeric material or light metal, and where the upwardly extending wedge has an oblique angle and where the other two angles are rounded, and to which feet the legs of the pallet are connected in a quite normal manner by intermeshing between the upwardly extending centre profile and the corresponding slots in the lower section of the legs, as the foot section comprises a slot on each side of the upwardly extending side and axially orientated openings that can be closed by corresponding closing and reinforcement profiles, said profiles comprising slots that by mounting on the upwardly extending part of the foot section surrounds the legs, and thereby fix the foot as the profiles are held in place by a folding of the foot section or by insertion of an end stop in the foot profile
- the foot in another embodiment of the invention consists of a triangular profile with the same cross-section as the above mentioned foot, but unbroken in the circumference and where the leg is mounted in a the leg suitable aperture in the upward facing surface of the foot and in which aperture the leg is fixed with a lock bar that preferably extends in the upper section of the foot profile and through holes in the leg, whereby the two parts are fixed to one another.
- the legs are designed in such a way that their strength can be increased by insertion of a vertical preferably squar reinforcement profile, preferably of light metal.
- said carrier surface is according to the invention encased in another sheet layer, which sheet layer in the joints are sealed by gluing, weldin or joint filling material.
- the pallet will as a consequence of the above mentioned embodiments furthermore be carried out as combinations of these, depending on to which purpose it is to be used and also how high loads it must be able to carry.
- the pallet built with the greatest strength must be able to carry a loa of approximately 2000 kg on the carrier surface and the simplest and most inexpensively built approximately 600 kg.
- the pallet has several advantages.
- the pallet can basically be assembled without use of welding of the individual parts/elements.
- the foot of the pallet is because of internally vertical support elements able to resist the pressure from the wheels that are at the end of the fork arm of a pallet lifting device, and the foot is also made as a from both sides slightly sloping skids, so that it does not make any great resistance when the wheels run over it.
- the foot is furthermore rounded on the under side so that it slides easily across an uneven surface.
- the pallet can be built with different strengths by insertion of more or less U-profiles, reinforcement sheets at the sides of the carrier surface, an reinforcement profiles in the legs and/or insertion of extra profiles in the lock bars.
- the pallet can be built in a version which is usable in places where a good or high demand for hygiene is present, and furthermore is the pallet because of its low net weight very suitable for goods that are to be transported by air, and also in connection with all other ways of transportation.
- As the outermost layer of the hollow structured sheet material of the pallet can be made in several colours this provides the possibility to use this as identification of the maximum load of the pallet or other group classifications.
- the self adhesive markings that can contain different information, just as these information could be printed directly on the surfaces for example by the way of silk printing and preferably before the outer sheet of the carrier surface is folded to its finished form.

- fig. 16 a top view of fig. 15, and fig 17 a top view of the pallet provided with reinforcement sheets on the under side.
- the pallet in fig. 1 rests on a foot 6 which is connected to a number of legs 4 for instance produced by injection moulding in plastic and shown in detail in fig. 4.
- the upper section of the pallet a carrier surface (not shown) is at the sides surrounded by a side edge profile 2 and in the corners ended in a corner profile 7.
- the entire upper section is held together by a strapping tape 8 that is guided in a channel 32 in the side profiles 2.
- the side profile is shown in detail in fig. 3.
- corner profiles 7 are provided with rounded corners so that the strapping tape 8 can be brought in close contact with the profiles, in particular at the corners of the pallet.
- Fig. 2 shows the same pallet seen from above.
- the pallet is made with the standard measures 80 x 120 cm, but could also be made as a _ pallet or to other measures for special purposes.
- the following description is mainly based on a possible way of assembling the pallet according to the invention.
- the uppermost carrier surface 1 of the pallet consists in the shown embodiment of four sections 1 that are framed by the above mentioned edge profiles 2.
- the edge profiles 2 comprise a relatively broad underlying support surface 30 and a somewhat narrower upper support surface 31, as shown in fig. 3.
- the pallet in the standard version has twelve legs 4 and as a whole is shaped so that it is generally similar to a conventional wooden pallet.
- Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of a section of a pallet according to the invention.
- the carrier surface 1 of the pallet is built of a multiple of elements of preferably thin plastic sheets consisting of two outer surfaces between which reinforcement profilings are provided, said sheets are folded to hollow box constructions that in the hollow spaces are reinforced by foamed material, such as polystyrene or similar.
- the individual sections 1 can be welded together so that dirt or water cannot penetrate into the joints and the entire upper side and/or under side of the pallet can for a similar purpose be covered with a sheet that can be of plastic or similar material.
- the carrier surface 1 comprises channels 42 in the foamed part for insertion of a lock bar 40 and square apertures 15b for reception of an upper locking part 12 of the legs 4.
- the lock bar 40 has apart from locking the legs to the carrier surface the purpose of reinforcing the carrier surface l of the pallet.
- the lock bar 40 is made of a polymeric material with a square or any other cross-section and can comprise one or more internal channels 40a intended for reception of for instance reinforcing metal bars (not shown) with a similar cross-section as the channels 40a. In order to ease the insertion of the lock bar 40 this bar is at the front end provided with a tapered insertion part that for instance can be fixed in the channels 40a with corresponding taps (not shown) .
- the profile lock bar 40 could also be made of an extruded aluminium or a rolled steel profile, if one wishes to provide the pallet with extra strength.
- the corners of pallet are finished with a corner piece 7 that has an opening 15a for receiving the locking part of the leg and an opening 15b for receiving the lock bar 40, alternatively removal of this bar if the pallet for instance is to be repaired.
- the corner piece 7 comprises two guide taps 17 on each side edge intended for engaging the corresponding channels 33 in the edge profiles. When the corner pieces 7 via the guide taps 17 are brought in engagement with the side profiles 2 the leg 4 can be placed.
- the leg comprises a flange 1 with four guide taps 11 on the upper side.
- the leg is internally in the upper part reinforced by several triangula reinforcement bars 13.
- the lock bar 40 can be inserted in the channel 42 when the remaining three legs 4 of the sectio have been inserted, whereby said legs along with the edge an corner profiles 2-7 are locked to the carrier surface 1.
- the guide taps 11 will in connection with the mounting of the le 4 intermesh with the holes 11a in the edge profiles and the corner piece 7, when the flange 10 of the leg has been connected to the three surfaces of the corner section. It is hereby obtained that the individual elements after the assembly work as one unit.
- the two centre legs are kept together by a separate sheet part 5 with holes 5a for the guide taps of the legs 11.
- the sheet part 5 has also the purpose of bringing the two centre legs in level with the other legs of the pallet.
- the feet 6 of the pallet can be inserted.
- the feet 6, as seen in a cross- sectional view in fig. 4, have also been made of a polymeric material, aluminium or steel sheet, which for instance can b extruded or rolled into the desired profile.
- a foot consists of a resting surface 20 and an upwardly extending centre profile 21, which is almost T-shaped with a slightly downwardly sloped transverse.
- the T-profile fits into a correspondingly shaped slot 21a in the bottom of the leg 4 b which the two parts can be brought in an intermeshing relationship with each other by insertion from the side.
- the foot 6 further comprises two lock and reinforcement profiles 22, that subsequently can be pressed firmly into th upper part of the foot profile.
- the profiles 22 are carried out with mutually symmetrical slots encasing the legs which hereby are fixed to the foot, as the profiles 22 cannot be displaced in the foot part, as said foot part either has a upfolded end or an end stop mounted.
- the shape of the feet 6 of the pallet permits that wheels at the end of the fork arms on a pallet lifting device can run over said feet without damaging them, lust as the rounded sides and ends of the profiles 6 allows that the pallet easily can slide over an uneven surface.
- the holes 15b are closed with a closing element 16, whereafter the strapping tape 8 which is placed in the channel 32 of the edge profiles and around the corner pieces, can be tightened.
- the strapping tape 8 which can be of the same type as the plastic tapes which among other things are used for bracing larger boxes, is placed in such a way that the bracing pressure will mainly be provided on the upper part of the carrier surface of the pallet, so that said carrier surface is forced towards the lower legs and foot parts and hereby providing a greater rigidity to the pallet.
- the strapping tape 8 will also maintain the closing elements 16 in place and at the same time prevent the lock bar 40 from sliding out.
- the side profiles 2 comprise at the upper side an upwardly extending and rounded edge 34 which forms a natural end to the carrier surface 1 of the pallet.
- Fig. 6 shows the pallet according to the invention as seen from the end.
- the pallet consists in this embodiment as the pallet in fig. 1 of a carrier surface 1, which is built of one or several box elements consisting of hollow structured sheet material which encases a foamed and rigid core of e.g. polystyrene or polyurethane foam.
- the pallet consists of a number of legs 4 of which three at one of the end faces are visible.
- the separate sheet part 5 as shown in fig. 5 is not used in the construction, as the legs 4 rest directly on the foundation lb, as shown in fig. 8.
- the legs 4 are ended in and connected to three longitudinal feet 6.
- a tape 8 is also seen, which is later further described.
- the same pallet is seen in fig. 7 in a top view, and it appears that the pallet has twelve legs 4 and three longitudinal lock bars 40.
- a cross-section through the lock bar is shown in fig. 11.
- the lock bar 40 is a hollow profile which is made so that a reinforcement profile 40b can be inserted if an increased strength is required.
- the profiles 40 and 40b can for instance be made of aluminium.
- the lock bars 40 which extend along the entire length of the pallet and each holding four legs are in the shown embodiment engaged in four cross-sectional reinforcement profiles 50, which as an example is made of aluminium, and shown in detail in fig. 10.
- the reinforcement profile 50 is a U-profile with a horizontally orientated opening.
- the U-profile 50 has three reinforced apertures 51 designed for receiving the lock bars 40.
- Fig. 8 shows a sectional view through the left leg 4 and the carrier surface of the pallet 1 seen at the same level a in fig. 6. It is to be noticed that the leg 4 in this embodiment does not have the guide taps 11 as shown in fig. 4.
- the leg 4 of the pallet is cylindrical and ended at the top with a lock hole 12 which internally has substantially the same cross-section as the lock bar 40 which is inserted therein.
- the lock hole 12 in the leg 4 is inserted into the carrier surface 1 of the pallet which consists of a foamed material la and an encasing layer of hollow structured sheet material lb.
- the vertical sides of the carrier surface have been reinforced with elements of light metal or hard plastic, such as polystyrene to which th reinforcement profiles 50 as an example can be fixed, as shown in fig. 14 by folding the two sides of the U-profile 50a.
- Fig. 12 shows how an assembly of the elements 52 in a corner can be carried out by an assembling profile 54 which as an example can be made of aluminium.
- the leg 4 is fixed to the foot in an aperture 6a in this The fixation is carried out when the leg 4 at first is inserted into the aperture 6a, whereafter a lock bar 6b is inserted at the top of the opening of the foot profile 6 and through two apertures that are made in the bottom of the sid wall of the leg. After inserting the lock bar 6b which in th foot fixes four legs 4, the foot profile 6 can be closed at the end with a lid 6c so that dust or the like cannot penetrate into the foot profile 6.
- the leg 4 can be reinforced by inserting a reinforcement profile 4a, e.g. made of aluminium.
- the reinforcement profile 4a which is hollow has in the shown embodiment a basic measure of 25x25 mm and supports the top of the lock bar 40 and at the bottom against the bottom of the foot 6, as the profile at the bottom has an inverted U-aperture 4b that accommodates insertion of the lock bar 6b.
- the shown corner in fig. 8 is in fig. 9 seen from the top. It appears here, that the tape 8 is inserted through the lock bar 40 and along a part of the end surface of the pallet as shown in fig. 6. In the shown embodiment, two tapes 8 are used, both inserted through the centre lock bar 40 and substantially encasing each their half of the pallet in an enclosed ring. One single tape 8 that is inserted through the two outermost lock bars 40 can also be used.
- Fig. 15, 16 and 17 show a further development of the pallet described in fig. 1.
- the pallet can in this case be made with a carrier surface of one foam filled box unit, as the carrier surface of the pallet is framed by an aluminium angle profile 18 which via apertures in the lowermost horizontal sheet part intermesh with the guide taps 11 on the leg 4.
- the shown aluminium profile 18 has a wall thickness of 2 mm, but can also be carried out with another wall thickness as well as in another material with the desired strength.
- the aluminium profile 18 is at the upper edge sealed to the hollow structured sheet material with either glue or joint filling material 19 so that there is no opening between the two layers and so that the pallet can be used for purposes where hygienic demands are required.
- glue or joint filling material 19 glue or joint filling material 19
- the two centre legs of the pallet must be equally raised, for which reason the separate sheet part 5, as shown in fig. 5, or alternatively distance sheets having a thickness corresponding to the thickness of the edge profile must be provided here.
- the lock bar 40 has another cross-section and has been inserted through a hole in the aluminium outer edge 18, said hole being closed with an end stop 18b. Prior to this the end part of the lock bar , as shown in fig. 16, has been expanded to a larger diameter so that it cannot itself work its way out again.
- the aluminium profile 18 is made in one piece and therefore the finish must be done by a gluing or a welding of the two ends for instance at 18c, either by argon or by friction welding.
- the foundation of the carrier surface consists of a hollow structured sheet material. When the pallet is lifted by the fork arms of a pallet lifting device the sheet material can sometimes be damaged if the forks for instance are merely driven into a position only just beyond the middle of the pallet and then tilted backwards, as the entire weight of the pallet or a major part of it for a short period of time will rest on the ends of the fork arms.
- the foundation can be reinforced and protected with metal sheets 24, e.g. of aluminium, that the fork arms can apply the pressure to.
- the metal sheets have in the shown embodiment a material thickness of 2 mm and a width of 57 mm and have at each end an aperture fitting the guide taps 11 on the leg 4, and can as such be used with the aluminium edge profile 18 instead of the intermediate sheet 18a.
- the sheets 24 can be carried out in a larger width if considered necessary. In the shown embodiment six sheets 24 have been inserted, whereby the foundation of the carrier surface of the pallet is protected against impacts from the fork arms, both if these come from the side or from the end of the pallet.
