Abstract

A carton blank shown defines two panels (1 and 2) for the top and base walls of an assembled carton, with end flaps (3 and 4) which will be overlapped to create a rear wall for the assembled carton. Side flaps (5) also extend from the edges of the main parts (1 and 2) and will be overlapped to form side walls in the assembled carton. Panels (1 and 2) are interconnected by a pair of tear-off strips (6) but the connections to the panels (1 and 2) are perforated as at (7), with a central section (8) being totally cut through. A video cassette can be retained within the assembled carton and the tear-off strips (6) provide a pilfer-proof arrangement so that the cassette cannot be removed from the carton until the strips are torn off.

Description

CARTON BLANK AND CARTON MADE THEREFROM
Video cassettes are normally sold in a carton which provides protection for the cassette and areas where written material may be applied. It is important for the shopkeeper to be able to ensure that the carton has not been opened, enabling the cassette to be removed and possibly replaced by another. The purchaser, however, needs to be able to see that the video cassette is present within the carton.
According to the present invention there is provided a carton blank defining two panels for forming the top and base walls of an assembled carton, the panels being joined together along one of their edges by at least one tear-off strip leaving a gap centrally of the length of those two panel edges, and flaps extending from further edges of the two panels to be overlapped and fixed together when forming the assembled carton.
By removing the tear-off strip or strips one side of the assembled carton will be left totally open so that a cassette can be slid in and out of the carton. However, whilst the product is on display for sale the shopkeeper can check that the cassette has not been removed from the carton by ensuring that the tear-off strips are still in place.
Ideally, there will be a strip defined between both ends of the two panel edges. Preferably, the or each strip will have a tab at one end thereof providing means for gripping the strip to enable it to be torn off. It is, moreover, preferred that the tear-off strip should be connected to each panel by a perforated line of material, preferably with a central length thereof cut through totally.
The invention also extends to a carton formed from a carton blank of this invention as hereinbefore defined.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred embodiment will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a plan view of a carton blank for a video cassette; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the carton when partly assembled.
The carton blank shown in Figure 1 defines two panels 1 and 2 for the top and base walls of the assembled carton, with end flaps 3 and 4 which will be overlapped to create a rear wall for the assembled carton. Side flaps 5 also extend from the edges of the main parts 1 and 2 and will be overlapped to form side walls in the assembled carton. Panels 1 and 2 are interconnected by a pair of tear-off strips 6 but the connections to the panels 1 and 2 are perforated as at 7, with a central section 8 being totally cut through. An additional flap 12 is provided to act as a dust barrier and for added protection to the contents. During assembly the blank is folded about the perforated lines 7 and the end flaps 3 and 4 are overlapped and glued together to create the sleeve. A video cassette can then be inserted through one end and the side flaps 5 are then overlapped and glued together so as to retain the cassette. The central portion of one end of the cassette is visible through the opening 9 between the two strips 6 and this portion can be gripped where curved cut-outs 10 are formed in the upper and lower panels 1 and 2 of the carton. The strips 6 provide a pilfer-proof arrangement so that the cassette cannot be removed from the carton until the strips are torn off. The purchaser will, of course, tear off the strips (by gripping the curved tabs 11) so that the cassette can be removed. The remaining part of the carton can be reused as a protective sleeve for the cassette.
