  • This invention relates to a railed vehicle.
  • Trolleybuses are also known which comprise a conventional bus having an elongate arm mounted on its roof which picks up electrical power form an overhead cable. Overhead cables are expensive to erect and look unsightly. I have now devised a railed vehicle which alleviates the above mentioned problems.
  • a railed vehicle comprising front and rear wheels for indexing with a channel in a monorail and contact means for picking up electrical power from a conductor disposed in said channel, wherein said contact means is mounted in line with said front and rear wheels.
  • the front and rear wheels are mounted on a bogey at the front of the vehicle.
  • the wheels comprise an annular peripheral flange which indexes with the channel in the monorail.
  • the contact means is disposed between said front and rear wheels.
  • the contact means can be raised or lowered, so that it can be disengaged from or engaged into the channel in the monorail.
  • the vehicle comprises a pair of driving wheels mounted at the rear of the vehicle.
  • a monorail system comprising a vehicle having front and rear wheels which index with a channel formed in a monorail and contact means for picking up electrical power from an electrical conductor disposed in the channel, the contact means being mounted in line with said front and rear wheels.

  • a channel 23 having a small gap of approximately 20mm at its top is formed between the rails 16, 17.
  • Oppositely poled electrical conductors 14, 15 are disposed on opposite inwardly facing sides of the channel 28.
  • the monorail can be laid along a road by cutting a small channel, and it will be appreciated that this causes a minimal amount of disturbance to other road users. Alternatively it may be laid along the surface of the ground in order to reduce installation costs.
  • the bogey 10 comprises front and rear wheels 11, 12 mounted to a metal chassis 13.
  • the wheels 11, 12 each have a central peripheral flange 25 which indexes with the channel 28 in the monorail 27 to guide the bogey along the monorail 27 when the tram is moving.
  • the downward force applied to the wheels 11, 12 is transmitted to the upper surface of the I- shaped rails 16, 17.
  • a cylindrical mounting 22 projects upwardly from the chassis 13 at a point between the two wheels 11, 12 in order that the bogey 10 can be pivotally attached to the underside of a tram.
  • a pair of electrically conducting rods 23, 24 are disposed in line along the longitudinal axis of the bogey 10.
  • the rods 23, 24 project downwardly through the mounting 22 and project into the channel 28 in the monorail 27.
  • the lower ends of the rods 23, 24 are provided with a contact set 18, 19 which make contact with the electrical conductors 14, 15 in the monorail respectively.
  • the upper ends of the rods 23, 24 are provided with respective arms 21, 20 which are spring biassed in order to maintain the contact set 18, 19 in contact with the electrical conductors 14, 15.
  • the contact set 18, 19 can be withdrawn from the monorail by rotating the rods 23, 24 in opposite senses until the contacts 18, 19 line up with the gap in the monorail 27.
  • the rods 23, 24 can then be lifted in order to withdraw the contact set 18, 19 from the monorail 27.
  • the bogey 10 can be pivotally mounted to the front of a tram 30 as shown in figure 3.
  • the tram 30 comprises a lightweight body having a pair of conventional road wheels 31 mounted at the rear.
  • the contact-set 18, 19 picks up power from the electrical conductors 14, 15 to drive a motor connected to the rear wheels 31.
  • the flanged front wheels 11, 12 guide the tram 30 along the monorail 27 as it moves forwardly.
  • the arrangement of the contact set 18, 19 and rods 23, 24 between the two front wheels 11, 12 gives a good alignment of the rods 23, 24 in the channel 28 of the monorail 27, so that the rods 23, 24 are not strained as the tram corners.
  • the power supply to the tram is preferably D.C. and it is possible to reverse the polarity of the supply to the motor by changing over the contacts 18, 19 of the contact set to the respective opposite conductors 14, 15: this would reverse the motor, but it would not normally be necessary to revere the tram except in an emergency.
  • a plough or flanged wheel may be provided at the rear which can be engaged with the channel 28 for reversing.
  • the contact set can be removed from the monorail in order that the front of the tram can be lifted onto a towing vehicle.
  • the monorail track may comprise an endless loop with trams travelling in one direction only.
  • a single track may be provided having turning loops provided at opposite ends so that the trams can turn around for the reverse journey. It will be appreciated that it would be necessary to reverse the polarity of the contact set for the return journey.

Abstract

Un système monorail comporte un véhicule muni d'un bogie avant (13) équipé de roues à boudin avant et arrière (11, 12) qui s'adaptent dans la rainure (28) d'un monorail (27). Un jeu de contacts (18, 19), monté entre les roues avant et arrière (11, 12), reçoit l'énergie électrique de conducteurs (14, 15) situés dans la rainure (28) pour entraîner une paire de roues arrière qui sont indépendantes du monorail.
