Description
SEATING FOR STADIA AND THE LIKE
This invention relates to seating for stadia and the like, more particularly to modular seating including a seat support system enabling seat units to be mounted on new or existing structures, for example the steps of a terrace in a football stadium.
One object of this invention is to provide seating for stadia, more particularly a support system therefor, which is economic, highly durable, and readily
assembled and installed with the minimum of cutting, drilling or other machining operations required on site.
According to one aspect of this invention we propose modular seating for stadia and the like comprising a seat support system of structural members preferably fibre reinforced composite structural members
connected or for connection together by slidably engagable connector parts in the form of an undercut channel on one member and a complementary head on the other, the system comprising at least one elongate support member connected to extend between post members secured or adapted to be secured to a
supporting structure. The elongate support member may be a continuous member or formed of two or more
members disposed and interconnected end to end. It is preferably in the form of a box-section and serves as a structural spine for the system.
The support spine beam preferably is an elongate octagonal cellular composite support spine beam having undercut channels in opposed parallel faces thereof, whereby the beam can be connected on the one hand, to floor or wall mounted posts at intervals along its length and on the other hand, can have seat units connected thereto at intervals determined according to the permitted loading and comfort of the occupants.
In the preferred embodiment, each post and/or seat unit has a portion which may be a recessed portion shaped to be complementary with and for receiving a part of the cross-section of the elongate support member.
Separate connector members are preferably used to connect the elongate support member to the posts and seat units to the elongate support member although it will be understood that, for example, the posts may be provided with undercut channels to engage
complementary head or lug members on the elongate support member or vice versa.
The structural members which comprise the seat support system are preferably integral sections comprising a plastic or ceramic matrix reinforced with glass fibres and formed by moulding or pultrusion.
Ancillary devices such as ashtrays, armrests or trays for personal belongings may be suspended from the elongate support member or other member of the seat support system by slidably engagable connector parts having the same or a similar configuration to the connector parts described above. It will be
understood that the slidably engagable connection permits ready adjustment of the position of the seat units in the various rows of seating, for example, so that the view of an occupant is not obstructed or to increase or reduce the density of seating as may be required from time to time.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided an elongate structural member having a substantially uniform outer cross-section in the form of a regular polygon and including at least one axial undercut channel.
The undercut channel is used for connection and the polygonal cross-section of the member provides a strong structural shape. The polygon may have any
number of sides and preferably has an even number of sides. Preferably then the member includes an axial undercut channel in at least two opposed parallel faces thereof. The polygon preferably has at least six sides and preferably is an octagon. In that case the member preferably includes an axial undercut channel in two opposed parallel faces thereof and in two further opposed parallel faces which lie in a plane perpendicular to the first faces. This is a strong symmetrical structure.
The member may conveniently be m the form of a box section and may be formed by pultrusion. The member may be made from any suitable material but preferably is made from composite material, for example,
comprising a plastic matrix with glass fibre.
One embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a row of seats; Figure 2 is an end view, to enlarged scale of the rowof seats shown in Figure 1. and
As will be seen from Figure 1, a row of seats 10 comprises an elongate support member 12 supported at intervals upon posts 14 secured to the step 16 of a terrace or auditorium or the like. Seat units 18 mounted on the elongate support member are spaced such that the span between posts accommodates approximately 2.5 seat units. It will be understood, however, that the density of seating can be varied within the limits of the maximum uniformly distributed load capable of being carried by the seat support system. As will be seen from Figure 3, each post comprises a web 20 at opposite ends of which flanges 22 project in opposite directions. Horizontal flanges 24 provide feet in which holes 26 are formed enabling the posts to be secured in position by masonry bolts (not shown). For ease of manufacture the posts may be formed in two parts subsequently bonded together as indicated at 28 to form an integral member.
An upper end portion 30 of each post is shaped to define a trapezoidal recess, in the inclined faces of which an undercut channel 31 is formed.
Three sides of the elongate support member 12 which is an octagonal box beam, are complementary with the trapezoidal recess so that the beam is received
therein to be supported by the post as illustrated. Diagonally opposed parallel faces of the octagonal box beam also have formed therein longitudinally extending undercut channels 33, enabling the beam to be secured to the post by connecter pieces 32 having on opposite sides thereof connector lugs 34 of head-and-neck configuration which are received in the channels 31, 33 formed in adjacent surfaces of the post and box beam.
The underside of each seat unit 18, in the illustrated embodiment, the lower end of each of the two seat side panels 19, is also formed with a trapezoidal recess or channel complementary with the upper portion of the box beam 18. Connecter pieces 35 similar to connector pieces 32 have on opposite sides thereof connecting lugs 38 which are received in undercut channels 33, 40 formed in the inclined faces of the box beam 12 and the trapezoidal recesses respectively.
