Definitions
- This invention relates to tamper deterrent covers.
- files contained in filing cabinets, trolleys and the like are open to inspection by a large number of people. From time to time it is undesirable to allow such inspection or at least to restrict access to certain files. Also it is a commonplace for personal files to be lodged amongst general business files. It is an object of the present invention to provide a level of protection to selected files in filing cabinets or the like with hanging files which is sufficient to deter unwelcome inspection. This is achieved by means of a lockable or sealable cover denying easy access .
- a tamper deterrent cover for the protection of files within a filing cabinet or system for hanging files comprising at least two sections connected one to another with one section slidable in another, each of two said sections provided with end recesses for engagement with file or drawer supports and said cover provided with locking means or sealing means. Also in accordance with the invention there is provided a tamper deterrent cover for the protection of articles within a container or confined space and comprising at least two sections connected one to another with one section sl dable in another said cover provided with locking means or sealing means and further provided with retaining means to retain the cover.
- one section will be connected or attached to another so that the cover does not separate in use or handling. It may be of advantage in some cases for the connection to be one section merely seated and slidable within another. This would allow, for instance, one of the sections to be exchanged more easily for another with different design features, size or locking means.
- the size of a cover can vary to suit the particular system and the number of items to be protected. The design may be varied to accommodate the sliding tracks or width of a particular horizontal or vertical system. Preferably a single cover used for files will be easily convertible to various widths e.g. from the currently popular A4 size to the widely used foolscap size. Although two width positions are normally sufficient for filing systems more positions are required where the cover is to be used with shelving, containers or drawers.
- a timer may be incorporated to release the lock and to allow access after a set period of time or during specified periods.
- Alarms may also be employed together with or instead of a lock such that attempted entry is signalled or recorded.
- a cover according to the invention comprises two main sections, one of which 1 (inner) is of slightly smaller and differing cross section and slides within the other, 2 (outer).
- the two sections 1, 2 are pushed toward each other so that the overall width of the cover is less than the distance between the file supports or runners at each side of the drawer.
- the cover is then placed over the file or files to be protected and the two sections moved away from each other until the file supports 3 meet the sides of the cover within the recesses 4.
- a key (not shown) is then turned in the lock 5 to bring the locking arm 6 to the position shown in figure 1 to engage with the locking pin 7.
- movement between the two sections 1, 2 is arrested by the locking pin 7 while the engagement of the file supports 3 with the recesses 4 prevent the cover from being lifted out of position.
- the locking arm 6 is shown in figure 1 above the outer section 2.
- the lock 5 When fitted into the cover the lock 5 fits into the aperture 14 and is secured by the cl p 15. The locking arm 6 is then inside section 1 for engagement with locking pin 7.
- the retainers 8 are not always required and are for use where there are no suitable runners or supports such that recesses 4 would not engage sufficiently to hold the cover. In these cases the retainers are fitted to the inner surfaces of each side of the enclosure and provide sockets 9 for receiving the protrusions 10 at each end of the cover.
- the retainers 8 must be properly located and to assist in this, part of the retainer 8 is a locating aid 19 which sets the correct distance from the top of the drawer.
- the first retaining piece is correctly positioned by placing its edge against the front of the drawer with the flange 22 resting on the top of the cabinet drawer file support.
- the retainer 8 With the adhesive pad protective cover removed the retainer 8 is pressed for adhesion against the side of the drawer and the height locating tab 19 subsequently broken off and discarded.
- the second retainer is fixed in the same manner on the opposite side of the drawer. If the cover is required to be used at a position other than the front of the drawer the correct positions of the retaining pieces can be measured from the front or back of the drawer. Where the cover is to be used as a deterrent for access to articles other than hanging files in for example a drawer, the height locating tab is unnecessary and can be broken off and discarded.
- the retaining pieces are then fixed by locating to the bottom of the drawer in a manner similar to the above procedure.
- Locking pin 7 may be fixed to section 1 to provide a specific width of cover when locked.
- the width adjustment mechanism shown in figure 1 is incorporated.
- the locking pin 7 is fixed to a locking pin carrier 11 which fits into the slot 12 forming part of a T-shaped aperture at the top of section 1.
- small recesses are shaped to receive the protruding pieces of locking pin carrier 11.
- the distance between each recess is the same as the width of each recess.
- the locking pin carrier 11 once seated in the slot 12 is thereby prevented from movement with respect to section 1. Upward movement is prevented by the outer section 2 except when locking pin carrier 11 is in alignment with the recess 13.
- this recess 13 which is formed in the top inner surface of 2 are sufficient to admit the locking pin carrier 11 so that it is not restrained by the recesses in 1.
- locking pin carrier 11 When locking pin carrier 11 is in alignment with 13 it may be pushed upward into it and moved along the slot 12 to seat in another position so setting a different width.
- recess 13 When the cover is locked recess 13 is displaced from the locking pin carrier 11.
- the clip 15 is installed on lock 5 above the locking arm 6 and moves in between the edges of slot 12 in 1.
- the clip 15 acts as a definite stop on the locking pin carrier 11 with the locking arm 6 in the locked position, and as a definite stop on the wide end of the slot 12 in the fully unlocked position.
- a free standing file support frame is used.
- a simple and effective means of securing frames is illustrated in fig 3 with part of the support frame 3 secured to the drawer of a cabinet by retainer 16.
- Retainer 16 is formed as a single piece with a loop for passing over the part of the frame to be fixed and two flat front faces carrying adhesive pads 17. Often only the drawer fronts are of full height and attachment of the retaining means would be to the inside surface of the drawer front.
- the frames usually consist of steel members welded or firmly fixed one to another such that securing a single frame member retains the whole frame.
- a frangible seal or alarm may be used in place of a lock so as to indicate entry to the f les.
- An index card 20 is fitted to the top of the cover by flexing the card and inserting it into channel grooves provided.
- Retaining means other than those described above may be used and may be fixed in place by various methods such as screws or rivets. In some cases it may be convenient for the retaining means to be simply a hole or slot in the side of the drawer or enclosure etc. In such cases the recesses 4 in the ends of sections 1 , 2 can be repl ced with or augmented by simple projections or spikes.
- the material used for both sections of the cover in this example is plastic but many other materials may be utilised by techniques such as folding, forming, moulding, rolling or extruding.
