Abstract
A three-way valve comprising a housing (1) with a chamber in which terminate three gates (25, 26, 29), which chamber comprises means (23, 24) for shutting off at least one gate (25, 26) and which means can be operated from outside, said means being so constructed that essentially three positions are possible, viz. a closed intermediate or inoperative position, a second position in which an inlet and an outlet are in communication with each other, and a third position in which another inlet and outlet are in communication with each other, the transition from one position to the other position being permitted only via a closed intermediate position, wherein said operating means (6) comprise a bearing (10) arranged eccentrically in the operating means.
Description
Title: Three-way valve
The invention relates to a three-way valve comprising a housing with a chamber in which terminate three gates, which chamber comprises means for shutting off at least one gate and which means can be operated from outside, said means being so constructed that essentially three positions are possible, viz. a closed intermediate or inoperative position, a second position in which an inlet and an outlet are in communication with each other, and a third position in which another inlet and outlet are in communication with each other, the transition from one position to the other position being permitted only via a closed intermediate position.
Through these features, an optimum guarantee of safety is obtained, preventing any undesired intercommunication of inlet and outlet passages. This is of particular importance if such valves are used to control gases that may lead to explosions when mixed.
It is an object of this invention to simplify and improve such a device as known from US-A-2, 441,253.
To that end, said means can comprise a bearing arranged eccentrically in the operating means. This bearing can be operatively connected to two gate shut-off valve members.
The gate shut-off valve members can be fitted with valve stems which are under the influence of the eccentrically arranged bearing. A valve rocker can be disposed between the eccentrically arranged bearing and each valve stem.
Owing to the fact that the housing essentially consists of an upper block and a lower block which are separated from each other by a flanged plate or similar closing element and the gates terminate in, the lower block, it is ensured that the surroundings remain free of the fluid to be processed.
In this respect, a further improvement is obtained if the part of each valve stem that is disposed in the lower block is surrounded by a fluid-tight bellows .
Improvement of the operation of the device is obtained if each valve stem is surrounded by a spring which is supported in such a manner that the valve member in question is urged into the closed position. This spring can be disposed in the upper block.
A further guarantee of a fluid-tight construction is obtained by connecting each shut-off valve member to the end of the corresponding valve stem by means of a welded joint . For that purpose, the lower end of the valve stem can comprise a coupling piece to which both the shut-off valve member and the fluid-tight bellows are connected by welding. In this manner, a simple but secure fluid-tight connection is obtained.
According to another embodiment of the invention, a three- way valve can comprise a housing with a chamber in which terminate a plurality of gates, which chamber comprises means for shuttting off at least one gate and which means can be operated from outside, said means being so constructed that essentially three positions are possible, viz. a closed
intermediate or inoperative position, a second position in which an inlet and an outlet are in communication with each other, and a third position in which another inlet and outlet are in communicatipn with each other, the transition from one position to the other position being permitted only via a closed intermediate position, this device being characterized in that the housing comprises a piston with a piston rod projecting on both sides thereof, while on opposite sides of the piston a medium inlet or outlet is connected to the valve housing, the ends of the piston rod being adapted to cooperate with a valve rocker whose other end operates a valve stem which is surrounded by a spring and which is supported in such a manner that the valve member is urged into the closed position. An important advantage of this device is that the valve remains safe if anything goes wrong, because the piston moves automatically to the central intermediate position.
To clarify the invention, one embodiment of the three-way valve will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic cross-section of the three-way valve according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic elevation of another embodiment of the three-way valve.
According to the drawing, a three-way valve comprises a housing 1 consisting of an upper block 2 and a lower block 3. Disposed between the upper block and the lower block is a flanged plate 4 fitted with a sealing ring 5 which provides for a fluid-tight seal. Disposed at the top of the housing is a rotatable control knob 6 which is rotatably connected to the upper block 2 by means of a screw 7. The upper block 2 comprises a recess 8 in which extends an eccentrically arranged hub 9. Mounted on this eccentrically arranged hub 9 is a bearing 10 (see Fig. 3) .
In an embodiment shown, this bearing 10 can cooperate with two diametrically opposite valve rockers 11 and 12 which have been mounted rotatably in the recess 8 by means of shafts 13 and 14, respectively. The ends of the rockers 11, 12 that face away from the ends that cooperate with the bearing 10 engage under support rings 15 and 16 mounted on valve stems 17 and 18, respectively.
The valve stems 17 and 18 extend longitudinally through the chamber provided in the housing 1, generally designated at 19. A collar 20, 40 is provided on the valve stems 17, 18, respectively, at the lower end of the part thereof that is disposed in the upper block 2. Disposed between this collar and the upper end of the chamber 19 is a spring 21, 22 for urging the valve stem into the downwardly directed position. The valve stem is provided at the lower end thereof with a shut-off valve member 23, 24 arranged for cooperation with valve gates 25, 26, respectively. Connected to the outwardly
directed ends of the valve gates 25, 26 are connecting nipples 27, 28, respectively, a connecting nipple 30 being connected to the third gate 29 (see Fig. 2) .
The connection, between each shut-off valve member and the valve stem is formed by a coupling piece 31 which is simply connected to the lower end of the corresponding valve stem by means of a screw connection. As this assembly is disposed within a sealing bellows 32, this connection need not be fluid-tight. The respective shut-off valve members 23, 24 are connected to the coupling piece by means of screws. To obtain a fluid-tight seal, the sealing bellows 32 is arranged around the valve stem between the flanged plate 4 and a collar of the coupling piece. The joints of the bellows are welded joints. In the drawing, one valve is shown in the opened position and the other valve in the closed position.
The operation of the three-way valve will be clear. By- rotating the control knob, each rocker will be displaced as a result of the eccentric arrangement of the hub in the control knob, viz. either to the opened position or to the closed position of the shut-off valve member. The construction is such that a valve member will not open until the other valve gate cooperating with the shut-off valve member is closed. Between the open and the closed position there is always a neutral position in which, in the present case both, shut-off valve members will keep the respective gates closed.
The embodiment described above is essentially a mechanical construction, but it will be clear that other constructions
are also possible. Thus, a pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic or other solution could be chosen to realize the object contemplated. By way of example, reference is made to Fig. 4 which very schematically shows a possible embodiment. Details are not shown, since these are well known in similar devices. In the other embodiment for operating a three-way valve, shown in Fig. 4, the starting-point is a cylinder 50 with two fluid connections 51 and 52. Disposed in the cylinder 50 is a piston 53 with an extended piston rod 54 projecting in opposite directions. The projecting ends of the piston rod 54 in turn operate right-angled levers 55 and 56. The levers 55 and 56 are connected to the frame at axes of rotation 57 and 58, respectively, and operate valve stems 59, 60 which are comparable to the valve stems 17 and 18, respectively, which have been described hereinbefore with reference to Figs 1-3.
In the same manner as described with reference to Figs 1-3, respective springs 61 and 62 are disposed around the valve stems for urging the valve stems into the closed valve position. Since the other necessary elements may be completely identical to those described above with reference to Figs 1-3, they are not shown or described here.
It will be clear that within the framework of the concept of the invention, a great number of modifications are possible. Thus, the number of gates and shut-off valve members may be increased without more than two gates being in
communication at any given time. However, if so desired, more than three gates could be arranged.
Claims
1. A three-way valve comprising a housing with a chamber in which terminate three gates, which chamber comprises means for shutting off at least one gate and which means can be operated from outside, said means being so constructed that essentially three positions are possible, viz. a closed intermediate or inoperative position, a second position in which an inlet and an outlet are in communication with each other, and a third position in which another inlet and outlet are in communication with each other, the transition from one position to the other position being permitted only via a closed intermediate position, characterized in that said operating means comprise a bearing arranged eccentrically in the operating means.
2. A three-way valve according to claim 1, characterized in that said eccentrically arranged bearing is operatively connected to two gate shut-off valve members.
3. A three-way valve according to claim 2, characterized in that said gate shut-off valve members are connected to valve stems which are under the influence of the eccentric bearing.
4. A three-way valve according to claim 3, characterized in that a valve rocker is disposed between the eccentrically arranged bearing and each valve stem.
5. A three-way valve according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized in that the housing essentially consists of an upper block and a lower block which are separated from each other by a flanged plate or similar closing element, with the gates terminating in the lower block.
6. A three-way valve according to claim 5, characterized in that the part of each valve stem that is disposed in the lower block is surrounded by a fluid-tight bellows.
7. A three-way valve according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized in that each valve stem is surrounded by a spring which is so supported that the valve member' is urged into the closed position.
8 A three-way valve according to claim 7, characterized in that the spring is disposed in the upper block.
9. A three-way valve according to claim 6, 7, or 8, characterized in that each shut-off valve member is connected to the end of the corresponding valve stem by means of a welded joint.
10. A three-way valve according to claim 9, characterized in that the lower end of the valve stem is provided with a coupling piece to which both the shut-off valve member and the fluid-tight bellows have been connected by welding.
11. A three-way valve according to one or more of the preceding claims, characterized by an operating member in the form of a turning knob comprising a recess in which a hub extends eccentrically, said bearing being mounted on said hub and the control knob externally comprising a depending casing within which are disposed said valve rockers.
12. A three-way valve comprising a housing with a chamber in which terminate a plurality of gates, which chamber comprises means for shutting off at least one gate and which means can be operated from outside, said means being so constructed that essentially three positions are possible, viz. a closed intermediate or inoperative position, a second position in which an inlet and an outlet are in communication with each other, and a third position in which another inlet and outlet are in communication with each other, the transition from one position to the other position being permitted only via a closed intermediate position, characterized in that the housing comprises a piston with a piston rod projecting on both sides thereof, while a medium inlet and outlet are connected on opposite sides of the piston, the ends of the piston rod being adapted to cooperate with a valve rocker whose other end operates a valve stem which is surrounded by a spring and which is so supported that the valve member is urged into the closed position.
