Description

"Mat"
THIS. INVENTION relates to drink coasters and place mats (hereinafter referred to as "mats").
The present invention seeks to provide a mat which can be transmitted through the post and which can bear a message or greeting in the manner of a postcard. After delivery to the addressee, the mat can then be used for its primary purpose.
In one form the invention resides in a mat comprising a mat body having a pair of opposed faces, one said face bearing an ornamental design or other representation and the other said face carrying a removable panel the exposed surface of which can receive a communication in writing.
The removable panel is preferably adhered to the mat body by way of an adhesive substance.
Preferably, the removable panel is formed of paper.
The removable panel may have a space to receive the name and address of a person to whom the mat is to be posted. In addition, the removable panel may have a space to receive a written message or greeting.
Preferably, the mat body is in the form of a thin slab. For preference, the slab is formed of cork. While the mat body may be of any suitable configuration, for preference it is rectangular or circular.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the following description of one specific embodiment thereof as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of a drink coaster according to the embodiment, showing the front face thereof;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 except that the rear face of the drink coaster is shown; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the re¬ movable panel on the rear face partially removed.
The embodiment shown in the drawings is directed to a drink coaster which may function as a postcard. The drink coaster 11 comprises a mat body 13 in the form of a thin rectangular slab of cork or other suitable material having two opposed faces 15 and 17 respectively. On one face 15 of the mat body (being the top face of the coaster) there is an ornamental design such as a reproduction of a photo¬ graph or graphic image, as is the usual practice with coasters. On the other face 17 of the mat body (being the bottom face of the coaster) there is provided a removable panel 19 of paper or other suitable material. The re¬ movable panel is bonded to the mat body by means of an adhesive substance which allows the panel 19 to be readily peeled from the mat body. The exposed surface 20 of the removable panel is provided with a space 21 on which a message may be written. The exposed surface 20 of the removable panel is also provided with a section 23 on which details of the addressee may be set out.
With the removable panel in place, the coaster may be transmitted through the post in the manner of a postcard. On receipt of the coaster, -the addressee may remove the removable panel and use the coaster in the normal way.
It should be appreciated that the scope of the invention is not limited to the scope of the embodiment described. For instance, the mat may be of any suitable material other than cork if so desired. Cork is particularly appropriate because its light weight facilitates trans¬ mission of the coaster through the post.
