TIENEY LAMPERT, 0F ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent N 60,636, (lated lDecember 18, 1.866; 'reissue No. 3,839, dated February 15, 1870.
IMPRQVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR SCRAPING'AND WQRKING- HIDES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters P-atcnt anrl making part: of the saxon.
lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, HENRY LAMPERT, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State ot'N ew York, tbrnierly of Nanda, N. Y., have invented a new and useful Hide-lVorkei-g and Ido hereby declare that the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenahle others to make and use the saine, reference beha:r had to the accompanying drawings torininp,r part of this specilication, in which- `Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end view of the same.
The object of my invention, the nature of which will hc'understood by refercnceto the specilicatiou and drawings, is to provide an apparatus for 'scraping and dressing the hides, heretofore a slow and laborious process.
l`he beam A, upon which the hideslie to bc worked, has a convex or c vlimlrical surface, and revolves easily upon the shaft B, which shaft has bearings in slotted uprights C, rising from the main frame D.
The shaft B is placed in an inclined position, and from one extremity an arm, (l, extends, by means of which the shat't is revolvedin either direction.
lhe eccentric disks p are fixed to the shaft.` B, and rest at their periphery on'cleats c, secured to the posts O.
By the action ofthe eccentrics' upon the cleats, when the shalt B is turned the beam A is raised or lowered, and in order .to retain it at any desired adjust; nient, the arm is made to engage rinthe teeth of a segment, (l, which is secured tothe frame Dka's shown in tig. 1.
The hides are placed on the beain and exposed to the action of the Areciprocating vworker g, to which is attached the i-ertically-adj ustable scraper e.'
A knil'e, f, may also be secured to g, and made adjustable thereon, the .action of which supplements that of the scraper.
The workerg is'attached to the cross-head1? by means ot' thebent spring h, and a yoke, e', vrises from it, whiclris provided with a loop to receive'the screwrod j. 4 A nut, k, upon the latter underthe loop of' the .yoke i, serves to adjust theworker higher or lower with reference to the pitman G, as may `be desired.
The upper end-ot' the screw-rod j is attached to the pitman which is pivoted at l to the 'cross-head F. The cross-head is suspended upon suitable guide-rodsatt-ached to the upper portion ot' thefraaie D, parallel with the shaft B ot' the beam. v
The cross-head and worker g are operated through the Pitman G by the crank H, fixed to A`the shaft a.
By thc revolutions of this crank, a reciprocating motion is inxpartei-l to the worker, and at the same time it is caused to rise and fall by the vertical sweep of' the pitnlan. rlhus, by thc combined motion of the cross-head and pitnlan, the worker g is made t0 sweep back and forth over the l'ace ot' the beam A, andto. -dssrcnd at the front end ol' its stroke and rise atl-the `back end thereof, so that it arts uponthe hideavhcn moving in one dircctioln'alul is relieved iig in the ol'iposite direction.
llhe springh is so ara-urged that, when left toitselt, it will depress the worker upon the beam or upon the while returnthe hidc placed thereon; and by means ot' the screwrodj and nut 1.', the prolmrtion ot' the stroke in which the worker is elevated is regulated. l
In Figure 3, I have shown a modification ofthe arrangenn-nt of the yoke-i and spring 11,'in which the 4latter is lnade nearly or quite straight, and suitably connected to the lower end ot' the cross-head F. In
this lnmlitication, the linkj will be pivoted to the pitman somewhere. between the point L :and the crank, as shown.
It' desired, twoseparate knives with separate springs, may be used l'or certain kinds of work. 'A hand-lever may he applied to the worker g, by which itsypressurc upon the work may he increased.
The bean: A may be revolved hy :tn automatic feeding device, if desirable, but it will generally oe advantageous t'or a. .workman to operate it.
What l claim as'niy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i:
1. The rotary beam A, in combination with the rec iprocating,r worker y, for the purposes set fin-th.
'2. The worker g, provided with either the knife f or scraper e, or both, and pivoted bar 7i, in combinafion with a suitable device for imparting-to the same an alternate reciprocatingand vertical movement, substantially as described.
3. rlfhe rotary beam A, provided -with a suitable vertical adjust-ment, for the purposes set forth.
4. The pivoted supporting bar h, either yielding or rigid, in combination with the cross-head F, pitman G, and-link z', arranged to operate substantially as described.
5. The screw-rodj and nut le, in combination wit-l1 the worker g, spring h, and pitman'G, constructed and operatiiig substantially as and for the vpurposes set HENRY LA MPERT.
forth.
