Be it known that I, Grenen HADFIELD, M. D., of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, und State of Ohio, have uven ted certain new and useful Improvements in Medical Vacuurn-Chambers; and I do hereby declare that the following il a full, clear, and exact deserintinn thereof. reference being had to the cccomnanving drawings forming part of this Specification.

My improvements relate to the class of devices known as medical vacuum-anoniem or ci-y-cupping apparntus, forV temporarily removing the atmospheric pressure from any desired part or member of the human body, .ad my presentinvntion is more particularly directed to apparatusadapted for use upon an arm or leg.

Figures 1v1-rd 2 are longitudinal sections of vacuum-chambers intended for application yto an arm and nleg respectively.

Figure 3 represents u. chamber adapted for use enla still" leg.

A is tbe chamber proper, being a deep box or trunk, composed of tin or other rigid und air-tight material.

C is a faucet, accessible both to the patient anu to the operator, ,to enable a partiel restoration of the natural pressure, whenever the racfaction has become too painful to the patient The appnratus is made self-sealing, by means of an India-rubber lip, D, around the entrance or margirrof the chamber, which lip, the instant that the air is rareed bythe operator, closes automatically around the limb` oi' the patient, and ex'cludes the external air.

In order to prevent injury to a. paralyzed hand, by being urawn or forced, in o constrained or erampeu con-- dition, against tbelend of the vncuum-ehambex. I provide n. suitable cross-barA h-enille. rest,'or support for the hand of th patient. e

When the patient is uuauie properly to grasp the handle o'ij tent, the nana muy be arranged cbereupon`by the operator; and fof ths purpose, I provide u self-sealing screw or cap, F, which, being unsci'ewed, aords lce'ess for the operator, to adjust the hand anrl fingers of the patient upon the rest or handle.

When the limb, whether arm or leg, is permanently crooked. the vacuum-chamber may be made ih the angular form represented in fig. 3.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The employment of a hand-support or rest, substantially es and furthe purposes eet forth.
