Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRANUIS H. HOLTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ORESTES CLEVELAND, ()F JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR ERASIVE HEADS FOR LEAD-PENCILS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 9,863, dated March 20, 1877; application filed February 20, 1877. [Term of Patent 14 years.]
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. HOLTON, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented or produced a new and original Design for Erasive Heads for Lead-Pencils; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying illustration, forming a part of this specification In thesaid illustration a perspective View is shown in Figure 1 of the erasive head applied to a lead-pencil, and in Fig.2 a sectional View thereof, more clearly showing the design.
Articles of this character, in order to economise the material of which they are constructed, and bring the same into a compact form, and thus adapt them to wear a long time, have heretofore been made in shapes or forms which, while accomplishing their great utility, presented a cumbersome and unsightly configuration.
It is the purpose of my design to construct the article in such a shape as shall preserve its utility, and yet present a configuration whose lines of beauty shall impart to it an ornamental effect, and add to its attractiveness as an article of commerce.
To this end the chief characteristic of my design is the general contour of the upper end of the erosive head, it being formed in the shape of a wedge-that is, its sides a b are inclined toward each other, and meet to form the edge I) h. A horizontal bead, e, surrounds the erasive head at the base of its wedge form, below which head a neck or base, 0, is provided.
While the sides of this wedgeshaped erasive head are shown as rounded, as at d, Fig. 1, they might be made straight without departing from the characteristic element of my improved design.
Having thus fully described my design, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A design for a rubber erasive head for leadpencils, consisting of a wedge-shaped head, circular body, and horizontal bead, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses F. H. HOLTON. Witnesses:
0. CLEVELAND, J omq H. STITT.
