JOSEPH REOKENDORFER AND TEILE H. MLLER, OF NEW YORK, N.
ASSIGNORS TO JOSEPH REOKENDOREER.
Design No. 4,642, dated February 7, 1871.
DESIGN FOR A LEAD-PENCIL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pant of the same.
To whom itmay concern Be it known that we, J osnPH REcKENDonFER and TEILE H. MLLER, of the city, county. and State of New York, have invented a new and origina-1 Design for Lead-Pencils, of which the following is a specification.
Our design, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, consists of a lead-pencil, the wooden part oi' which is made with a swell or enlarged part, a, in the center or about midway between the two ends, and thence gradually tapering or decreasing ill diameter toward the ends, as shown at b.
The stamp, indicating the quality or name of the pencil, is to be placed on the middle part a, thus leaving the ends free to he cut.
This pencil possesses several advantages over the ordinary wooden pencil, which has the same diameter' throughout its length- First, when held for writing or drawing it adapts itself more readily to the hand, permits an easier, firmer hold, and can be held with a nicer balance.
Second, it can be made from wood that is somewhat imperfect or otherwise too small throughout its length to produce an ordinary ronnd pencil.
Third, the stamp is placed in the center or middle, so that both ends are left free to he sharpened, and the ends, being small, can be more easily and quickly sharpened than those ot'an ordinary pencil.
lVhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The design for leadpcncils, as herein shown and described.
Iii testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence 0f two subscribing witnesses.
JOS. RECKENDORFER.
