Description

sweetessew CHARLES PRATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Design No. 3,357, dated February 9, 1869.
DESIGN FOR THE TOP OR BOTTOM OF A SHEET-METAL CAN.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/m Be it known that I, CHARLES PRATT, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for Bottoms or Tops of Sheet-Metal Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference heing had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved design of arrangement for the bottoms or tops of sheet-metal cans, for strengthening them by grooves and ridges formed therein by stamping in dies.
The drawing represents a plan view of the bottom of a. sheet-metal can, formed according to my improved desi n.
Agrepresents the outer edge, which is bent over in the ordinary manner for securing to the body-portion of the can.
B represents a deep groove within the said edge,
extending around the sheet, the outer wall of which is abrupt, while the inner wall C is formed on a gradual incline, and rounded at the corners.
The said groove juts sharply into the elevated edge A at the corners d.
The plane e, within the groove B, is slightly lower than the outer edge A.
Between the plane e and the inner plane j; a broad groove, g, is struck, which is traversed at the corners by the ridges h, radiating from the centre, the plane of which is slightly lower than the planes e or f.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The design for the bottoms or tops of sheet-metal cans herein set forth and shown.
OHAS. PRATT.
