ABCDEFGHIJKLMNO PQRSTUVWXYZS:` abcdefghjklmnopqrst uvwxyz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAVE F. SCHROEDER, OF MILL VALLEY, ASSIGNOR TO V. J. A. REY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 22,263, dated March 7, 1893.
Application filed January 16, 1893. Serial No. 453.619. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE F. SoHRoEDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mill Valley, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The design comprises capitals, lower case letters, figures, dollar mark, and the character for the word and The main characteristic of the design is that the letters are of Roman formation with the shaded portions thereof very heavy. The straight portions of the capital letters at their base line and top are flared very slightly and are Well pointed, producing a very distinct and finely cut letter. This fiared feature is not carried to the extent commonly found in letters of this general character and in proportionV to the heavy character of the letters shown is very slight and only serves to more clearly define the edges and `give to the letters a finish. It will be seen that this flared feature is almost imperceptible at a glance and that the heavy straight lines of the letters appear to be formed with the regularity of the block type. Further, the light lines of the letters are, in proportion to the heavy or shaded lines, very light, thus securing a high contrast and in addition to the heavy and Well defined character of the letters giving to the same a decided delicacy of finish. Certain other features of the capital letters may be mentioned as follows: The letter B has its lower bow portion slightly larger than its corresponding top portion, and extending out slightly beyond the same, and this lower bow portion gives the letter the same harmonizing character as exists between P and R which have their bow portions large in proportion to their stems, and much extended; C has its shading heaviest at the base and shades 0E to the top Where it merges into an enlarged ending. Letters having the same enlarged ending are G and S3 E and F have the ends of the horizontal project ing portions heavily shaded and pointed, only a slight outward point being formed thereon which extends slightly beyond the main outer line of the letters, in addition to the Well defined tapering form of these ends; G ends in a heavily shaded perpendicular portion extending nearly to the top of the letter and giving it the pronounced characteristic of those letters having the heavy straight lines; L T and Z all have the same characteristic feature common to E and F g M and N differ in that all the lines of the M are slanted while those of the N are perpendicular, with the exception of the middle line; P and R, as before stated, have their bow portions larger than usual and conforming to the lower bow portion of the letter 13; Q and R have the same characteristic in the form of the tail portion Which is heavily shaded, and gradually tapering form without thepresence of much curvature. These tail portions harmonize with the character of the C G and S which partake to some extent of the heavily shaded tapering ending peculiar to the Q and R. The lower case letters have the same general characteristic of the capitals, and a further distinctive feature will be seen in the manner in which the tops ofthe straight line letters ab, ad, u h, cciujn rek, nl, um, un, ccp, cc q, cc 1.,?? u un are fomned which instead of being square, orcut off at right angles, are slightly inclined with a very slight forwardly projecting point, and t-he line of the top curved almost imperceptibly The shade part of these letters Where they end or where portions of the letters connect taper off very abruptly though to avery fine and distinct point or line.
Having thus described and fully pointed out the descriptive features of the design, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for afont of type, substantially' as herein described and shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
GUSTAVE F. SCI-IROEDER.
