Leiters Patent for a design No. 69, dated June 25, 1861.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known, that I, H. W. HAYDEN, of' Waterbury, in the county cf New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or produced a new and original design for a Mat for Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, and Photograph Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.
The said drawing represents a front or face view ofa mat embellished with my design.
The Adesign is a national one, consisting` of an eagle, two flags, a cannon, muskets, afscroll containing the words E Pluribus Unum, and a row of stars lra'tfdround the opening in the mat.
The above'na'ilrbir mifsne 'lfmpsed as follows: Around the elliptical opening A in the mat are placed the stars a, and at the `tp oi, OBQUQQ A there iS the eagle B with extended wings.
At each side of the opening A, just below the eagle, there is an American Hag B'. These flags extend down to about the centre of opening A, and a series of musket barrels C, with fixed bayonets, project from the opening at each side, immediately below the flags. Below the mu'slrets there is a siroll D, containing the Words E Pluribus Unnm," and below the scroll the cannon E is placed, mounted on a carriage, a pile of balls b being on the ground below the muzzle.
l'Ihe ags B are attached to staffs c c, and the dage are represented at their lower parts towards the opening A.
The design, it will be seen, is a purely military and national one. It is chiefly designed for likenesses of military men.
Having thus described my design, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The general configuration of the parts herein shown and described, to form a. new and original design for a mat for Daguerreotype and similar cases.
