UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
EDwARD o. MOORE, On YONKERs, AssieNoR TO TIFFANY a Oo., Or NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR FORK AND SPOON HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 11.333. dated August 12, 1879; application filed May 17, 1878. [Term of patent 14 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. MOORE, of Yonkers, in the State of New York, have originated and produced a Design for Spoon and Fork Handles, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying photographic illustrations, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of a fork having a handle according to my design. Fig. 2 is a front View of a spoon having its handle formed according to my design. Fig. 3 shows a modi fication of the design as applied to a spoonhandle. Fig. 4 is a reverse View of a spoonhandle according to my design. Fig. 5 is a reverse view of a fork-handle.
The design for handles and bases, hereinafter described, is intended to be placed upon a complete outfit for table use, composed of dinner, breakfast, and dessert spoons, forks, and knives.
The principal feature of the design is from classical story, the front and back of a handle according with each other in this respect, and both belonging to the particular story illusz trated. The general appearance of this portion of the design, not having reference to details, is the same throughout the set. The remainder of the design-that is to say, the outline and the ornaments connected therewith-are both in general appearance and in details the same throughout the set.
rlhe Outline of the handle is a wave-line more nearly resembling the outline of the violinbody, and composed of a double thread, a a, extending on the front along the sides from the leaf b or other ornament at the joining of the handle with the base of the bowl or tines, and on the back from scrolls just above the mask or head c to and ending in the scrolls d d near the top, the space between the scrolls being iilled with a leaf or iiower ornament, c, that folds over on both the front and the back of the handle.
On the front of the handle within these marginal lines is a grouping of figures, emblems, and ornamental leaves, j', illustrating a story in mythology. The characteristic of this portion of the design is classical story; and
although each handle in the set may differ from all the others, still this feature of classical story and general resemblance predominate in all. On the back, within these marginal lines at the head of the handle, is left a plain space, g, On which to engrave or otherwise add, if desired, initials, crest, &c. Below this space is a group of emblems and ornaments, h, corresponding with the grouping contained in the classical story on the front of the handle, and in general resemblance the same throughout the set, although differing from each other in details. At the base of the bowl or tines on the front the marginal lines are merged in a leaf or ornament, b, and on the back in scrolls just above a classical emblem, such as the mask or head c, shown in the figures.
I claim- 1. The design for the front of a spoon or fork handle, consisting of the violin shaped outline, bordered mainly by moldings extending from near the base of the fork-tines or spoon-bowl on each side of the handle, and terminating in scrolls on each side of the center ofthe tip of the handle, the space between said scrolls being filled by a representation of foliage, and the front of the handle between the borders being occupied by foliage and a group of figures illustrating ancient story, as shown.
2. The design for the back of a fork or spoon handle, consisting lof the violin-shaped outline, mainly bordered by moldings extending from scrolls near the base of the fork-tines or spoon-bowl, and terminating in scrolls on each side of the center of the handle-tip, the space between the scrolls on the tip being occupied by a representation of foliage, the widest portion of the handle near the tip being smooth or blank between the borders, while below said widest portion, and between the borders where they swell outward, is arranged a detached group or trophy of flowers or foliage intertwined with antique articles, as shown.
