Be it known that I, ALBERT J. REDWAY, a resident of the village of Avondale, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, and doing business in the city of Cincinnati, county and State aforesaid, have originated and designed a Design for Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying woodcuts, making part of this specification.

Arepresents a stove, of which B is the side, G the top, D the front, and E the base. At the side B, and projecting therefrom, is the door-frame F, handsomely shaped, and its sun face diversified by the ribs or projections ji At the front of this frame swings the door G, provided with pleasing windows of a Gothic type. Below the door projects a plate, H, for supporting sad irons, &c., and shaped as shown-via, its edge advancing at each corner and scalloped at the ends, and retreating around the middle, so as to be symmetrical in appearance with the door G.

A considerable portion of the side around the door preferably consists of Russia iron, It, protected on the outside by a beautiful design of cast fret-work, K. Frequently, in using other parts of the design, I dispense with the Russia iron and fret-work, and, instead, employ an ornamental side wholly of cast-iron.

In front of the plate H, and parallel with the side of the stove, is a foot'rail, I, (preferably nickel-plated to impart a better finish,) of an octagon shape in cross-section, connected to the stove and supported at either end by an upwardly-bowed arm. The ends of this rail terminate in ornamental points, as shown. At the front of the stove swings a door, J, flat at bottom and arched at top, to accomm 0- date its outline to the general outline of the stove-front. A window in the upper portion of the door adds to its good appearance, and the name of the stove is placed Within an ornamented plate below this window. Below this door, and extending forward, is the hearth plate L, each corner of which projects beyond the sides and ends, and is resolved into several faces, m, as shown. A sunken panel, M,

immediately within the edge of the l1carth,affords a pleasing relief to the eye, and breaks up the unpleasant effect an unbroken flat surface gives. The top of the stove O is arched and at the center surmounted with a base, N here of octagon shape, on which rests an urn, O, of like shape. The name of the stove, also, preferably appears on this base, over each side of the stove.

On the top 0 is an ornamental raised border, 12, and ornamental lines of tracery n. Each corner edge P of thestoveis extended out, and made to project beyond the sides and top, and is formed, as shown, so as to correspond in general outline with theout-lineofthe hearth L, anddoor G, and plate H. The projecting corner edge or flange imparts character to the design and variety to the general appearance of the SLOVG. At the top of the stove these edges are each surmounted with an ornament, T, having a point, t. This ornament relieves the top from an unbroken sameness of outline, and adds to the boldness and beauty of its shape.

The stove is supported at each corner upon a leg, X. An ornamental base-plate, U, provided with an open fret-work of a beautifulde sign, extends between each leg, and not only preferably aids in supporting the stove, but serves the purpose of improving the general appearance of the latter, and imparts to the stove an appearance of massiveness and solidity, and of symmetry of proportions, of which a stove supported upon legs merely is devoid. The exit-flue of this stove is on the side opposite to that shown; but it may be located at the rear end, as shown in Figure 2, or other desired point. It has nothing to do with this design.

The main features of the design are as follows:

First, the general outline and conformation of the stove as an entirety. In view of this feature of my design it is apparent that it becomes immateria] how the sides or ends are ornamented, the essence of this feature of the design being the new and ornamental shape which meets the eye when the stove is viewed as a whole.

Secondly, the side consisting of a fret-work with a polished backing-plate. The visual eft'eet of this combination of the smooth background and raised ornamental loregrou'nd is pleasing in the extreme.

Thirdly, the baseplate U as an ornamental addition. to the base of a stove.

What I elaim as my design, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The design for a stove having the form and configuration substantially as shown in and by the accompanying drawing.

2. The design for a stove-plate having a fretwork with a polished iron backing, substantially as set forth.

3. The design for the base U, ornamented by an open fret-work, substantially as set ibrth.

4-. The design. for the top plate (1, having a base, N. ornamented by reliefs n n, as set forth.

5. The design for the side plate having the ornamented frame F, Gothic door Gr, and plate 11, substantially as set forth.

6. The design for the front plate having the edge P, ornament T, ornamental door J, and hearth L, substantially as shown and d eseribed.
