VF. CRANE. Buckles.
No. 10,704. Patented May 28,1878| UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK CRANE, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEV JERSEY.
DESIGN FOR BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Design No. 10,704, dated May :28, 1878; application filed April l, 1878.
- [Term of patent 7 years] To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK CRANE, of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have originated a Design for Trace or Harness Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others Skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification, and in which- Figure lis a top view of the buckle, and Fig. 2 an end view of the front of the buckle.
This buckle has side bars, which are oval, or nearly so, in cross-section, and slightly taper or are outwardly from the rear to the front cross-bar, which front cross-bar is ele 'va-led above the plane of the side bars, and slightly curved in the direction of the width of the buckle, but flat or straight transversely.
In the accompanying drawing, the letterA indicates the band end or front cross-bar of the buckle, which bar is curved, as represented, and on which the point of the tongue lies, the tongue being pivoted or hinged to the rear cross-bar B. This bar is round, or nearly so, in crosssection.
The letter C indicates the side bars of the buckle. These side bars are oval, or nearly so, in crosssection, and taper or are outwardly in the direction of the front crossbar, as shown in the drawing.
The front cross-bar has a widened face, a, which face is slightly convexly curved in the direction of the width of the buckle, but straight or flat transversely, and elevated somewhat above the plane of the side bars, particularly at the point where the side and front bars meet, as indicated in the drawing. This face a may be at, or nearly so, in the direction of the width of the buckle, but more convexly curved toward the sides of the buckle, as at d d. From the bottoni of the buckle the side bars are represented as being in a lower plane than the front cross-bar.
I am aware that buckles are made which have tapering side bars with a widened and rounded face to the front cross-bar.
Nia-t I claim is- A harness or trace buckle having a rear cross-bar, round, or nearly so, in cross-section, side bars slightly tapering or iiarin g outwardly from the rear to the front cross-bar, and oval, or nearly so, in cross-section, and a front crossbar elevated above the plane of the side bars, and curved in the direction of the width of the buckle, but straight or dat transversely, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK CRANE. Witnesses:
JosEPH CoULT, EMIL TOERING.
