BAND-CUTTER ATTACHMENT FOR FORKS.

Be it known that I, HERMAN SGHWANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buxton, in the county of Traill and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Band-Cutter Attachments for Forks, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a fork attachment, and more particularly to the class of band cutter attachments for forks.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character in which the bands of bundled straw, hay or corn stalks may be severed on the penetration of the fork in the said bundle, thus enabling the feeding of the bundled material to live stock.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character in which a band cutter may be readily and quickly applied to the handle of a fork, so that on penetrating the bundled material the band wrapping the same may be severed, thereby enabling the material to be fed to live stock in a single operation of the fork.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment which may be readily and easily applied to the handle of different style forks for the severing of the bands of bundled material when engaged by the said fork.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a band cutter attachment of this character which is simple of construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in op eration, and inexpensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fork with an attachment constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the attachment removed from the handle or fork. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates the handle of a fork, and 6 the fork head thereof having the usual tines or prongs, the latter being formed integral with a tubular socket member 7 adapted to fit upon one end of the handle in the usual well-known manner.

The band cutter attachment comprises a triangular-shaped cutting blade 8, which is secured at one edge between a pair of parallel strips or reinforcing bars 9, the same being formed with outwardly bowed clamping jaws 10 at one end of the cutting blade 8, the jaws being adapted to detachably embrace the handle 5 of the fork. These strips 9 at the opposite end of the cutting blade 8 are formed with spaced claw fingers 11, which are adapted to engage the fork head 6, thereby mounting the cutting blade in position on the fork.

The attachment when applied to the fork is adapted to be mounted thereon, so that its cutting blade 8 will depend from the under face of the handle 5, so that when the tines penetrate a bundle of material contiguous the band tying the same, the latter will be severed by the said cutting blade of the attachment, so that the bundle of mate rial may be fed to live stock. This cutting blade is provided with downwardly converging cutting edges 12, which serve to sever the band tying the bundle of material, either when the tines of the fork are engaged in the bundle or on the pulling of the same therefrom.

What is claimed is:

A band cutter attachment for forks, comprising a cutting blade, strips disposed at opposite sides of the blade and connected thereto, a split collar formed on the said strips at one end of the blade and adapted for detachable connection with the handle of such fork, and claw fingers formed on the opposite ends of the strips and engageable with the fork head of such fork, substantially as described.
