OLIVER KELLS, or STEUBENVILLE, onto.
Letters Patent N 99,7 7 7, dated Februarylo, 1870.
METALLIC HEARTH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER KELLs, of Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Hearths; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification,'inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective view of m y improved health, and
Figure 2 is a cross section of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.
My improvement consists in the construction of hearths having a metallic shell filled in with some non-conducting material, which construction I will proceed to explain, that others skilled in the art may be able to make and'use them.
The shell (0 is cast or otherwise made of iron or other like material, and of a shape to conform to the shape of the fire-place for which it is intended. I
This shell to is filled with plaster Paris, or any other suitable non-conducting material, as at b.
On the edges orenclosi'ng sides 0 of the shell (I, I make lugs (I, with holes through them for the purpose of fastening the hearth to the floor.
By the useof this hearth I wholly do away with the necessity of framing trimmers for the support of hearth-beds, for while the upper or metal surface may be very hot, the lower or non-conducting is always cold, so that it can be fastened directly to the floor without the least danger from the heat of the fire; and, further, there, is no danger of its breaking or wearing away, as is the case with stone and marble hearths, and it is much .less costly than either of these kinds.
It can be gotten up in very handsome and ornamental style by making it of hronze or other such ma terlal, 01 by making it with ornamental glesigns and figures upon its surface.
The inner surface may be corrugated or divided up into compartmentsfor the better retaining of the nonconducting materialwithin the shell.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'A hearth, consisting of a metallic shell, at, having a filling of non-copducting substance 12, substantially as described and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In witness whereof, I the said OLIVER KELLs, have hereunto set my hand.
OLIVER KELLS.
Witnesses A.. S. NICHOLSON, 1t. 0. WRENSHALL.
