FERDINAND R-IEDL, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO BERNHARD SPERBER AND ONE-FOURTH TO DAVID ZEIMANN, BOTH OF BERLIN,
GERMANY.
TABLE OR LIKE STAND FOR ADVERTISING PURPOSES AND FOR DISPLAYING AND STORING ARTICLES AND GOODS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1911.
Application filed July 25, 1910. Serial No. 573,710.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND RIEDL, salesman, of Vienna, Austriallungary, and a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful improvements in or connected with table or like stands for advertising purposes and for displaying and storing articles and goods such as bakery or fruit, spice, toothpicks, cigars, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising casters adapted for use in public places where it may be arranged on tables in position to be accessible to the public.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide audible signaling devices for calling or attracting the attention of attendants of the public place in which the device is installed, and this feature, may be in the form of means permitting the users to turn the caster about its axis with or without ringing the signaling devices.
This invention has other objects and features of novelty which will be more fully described in the accompanying drawings and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of a device embodying one form of my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof with parts broken away. Fig. 8, is a sectional view on lines A A of Fig. 2 illustrating the base portion of said device. Fig. 4, is a View in side ele- .Vation, with parts in section, of another form of the invention. Fig. 5, is a sectional View on line B B of Fig. 4. Fig. 6, is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of the base with parts broken away and with parts in section. Fig. 7, is a similar view in vertical section. Fig. 8, is a View in side elevation, with parts in section, of another form of my invention. Fig. 9, is a horizontal sectional View of the base portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 8.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different fig ures of the drawings.
As illustrated in the drawings, and with special reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 1 inclicates a base having an upwardly extending bottom wall, 2, which is bent to form a cen tral bearing portion 8. The bearing portion 3, is circular and a depression or recessed portion 8 is provided centrally of the bearing portion 3. A rotatable cover 4 is provided in the form of a lid, having a marginal bead 6, engaging the upper edge of the outer wall 7 of the base 1. The cover 4, is provided with a guide ring 5, which rests upon the bearing 3. A retainer 9 fits upon the cover 4 and has an annular flange 12 which projects through the cover and into the recess portion 8. Bolts 10, provided with nuts 11, may be provided to hold the retainer in position.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that means are provided for preventing accidental displacement of the cover 4 from the base 1 and providing for rotation of the cover 4 upon the base 1. The cover 4 is provided with a plurality of openings into which receptacles 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 are removably positioned for the purpose of holding pepper, salt and like condiments. An ash tray 22, and a match holder 23, may also be provided on the cover 4. Knobs 16 may be provided on the cover 4 for rotating the same to bring the desired receptacle into an accessible position. A column 13 rises from and is supported on the cover 4 and said column carries a basket or receptacle 14 suitable for'the reception of confectionery, fruit, or the like. A suitable handle 15 may be provided for removing the caster when desired.
In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the column includes a cylindrical transparent member 29 which is designed to protect and disclose advertising or display matter which may be incorporated in the structure of the caster. The column 29 rests upon the cover 4, and in this form of the invention, the cover 4 has an upwardly extending flange 4 engaging the inner face of the transparent column 29. A circular rack 28, is mounted on the under side in the cover 4 and revolves therewith. The bottom wall of the base 1 supports or is connected with an upright 40 which may form a supporting element of the column structure. In this form of the invention advertising or display matter is arranged to be positively actuated or moved upon rotation of the caster and is arranged to be displayed through the transparent portion 29 of the column.
As illustrated main rollers 26 are provided about which portions of a relatively wide band or strip 24 is looped. The remaining portions of the strip 24 travel about and are held in a predetermined path of travel by idler rods 25 which are rotativelymounted on the lower wall 2 at 30. The rollers 26 are provided with gear wheels 27 which mesh with the rack 28 so that when the cover 4 is rotated the strip 24 will move correspondingly to the extent of movement imparted to the column and cover.
A plurality of signaling devices may be provided for attracting the attention of attendant-s and if desired this feature of the invention may be in the form of bells of different tones.
As illustrated, more particularly in Figs. 6 and 7, a bell 32 is secured to the outer wall 7 of the base and a tapper 33 is arranged for engagement with the bell. The tapper 33 is pivotally mounted at 34 and is normally held out of contact with the bell 32 by laterally disposed spring 35. The tapper 33 is mounted to swing horizontally and is provided with a tail portion 36 which lies in the path of an actuator 31 mounted on the cover 4. A spring 37 normally holds the actuator 31 in the position shown in Fig. 7 but when the actuator 31 is depressed it lies in the path of and serves to actuate the tail portion 36. The actuator 31 is adapted to be grasped by the user to rotate the cover 1 to bring the desired receptacle into an accessible position and during such rotation said actuator 31 when held depressed will actuate the tapper 33. However, the actuator 34 may also be used to rotate the cover a without actuating the bell tapper.
In the form shown in Figs. 8 and 9 the column consists of two uprights 13 supporting the basket 14. In this form of the invention the bottom wall 2 terminates in Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
the bearing portion 3 in which a retainer ring is disposed. The retaining ring 5 is or may be anchored to the cover 4 and is provided with threaded members 5 engaging a groove in the bearing portion 3. This arrangement, in connection with the overhanging portion 6, prevents displacement of the cover 4: from the base 1. In this form of the invention a bell 32 is arranged to be rung by a centrally disposed tapper 31 which is normally held out of contact with the bell by a spring 37.
I claim:
1. A caster comprising, a base, a cover rotatably mounted on said base, a plurality of receivers on said cover, a column rotatable with said cover, and a basket-like receptacle and handle carried by said column, combined substantially as described,
2. A caster comprising, a base having a centrally disposed guide receiving means, a plate concentrically arranged and rotatably mounted with respect to said base, an annular guide for said plate secured to said base, a column rigidly connected with said plate, and a basket-like receptacle and handle carried by said column, combined substantially as described.
3. A caster comprising, a base having an upturned rim and centrally disposed guide receiving means, a bearing ring, mounted on said base, a plate concentrically arranged. with respect to said base, resting on said bearing ring, and having an annular flange overlapping the said base rim, an annular guide for said plate secured to said base, a column rigidly connected with said plate, and a basket-like receptacle and handle carried by said column, combined substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have subscribed this in the presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND RIEDL.
WVitnesses RICHARD KoMINsKY, AUGUST FUGGER.
