Description
ilntml taire .stent v ctiiilire;
HENRY SWINEFORD, OF vl'iIIFELIN BURG, PENNSYLIANIA.
Letters Patent No. 99,492, dated February 1, ,1870.
. mma- IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLDS.
The Schedule refr-:actedy tp in these Letters Patent and making part of the same tion and arrangement of a scaiiold capable of being extended, and contracted, and adjusted to suit any unevenness iu the ground, all as hereinafter more fully set'forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I Vwill now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, inl Which-'- `Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure, a front view of my machine;
Figure 3-is`a horizontal section of the same; and
Figure'4 shows one of the springs which support the sliding portions of my scaffold.
A A represent two uprights, placed at suitable dis-v tances apart o'u the bed-piece B, and connected at their upper ends, on the rear side, by a cross-bar, C.
lhe uplightsAA are further connected by inclined vhars D D, with the ends of the. bed-piece B, and are thusltifrmly braced on the same. v
Upon each side of the bed-piece B, aboutl the centre, is hinged a. har, E, and this bar is, by means of a hinged brace, G, at its outer end, connected with a cross-bar, H, which is attached to the two uprights A A in thefollowing manner:
. To each end of the cross-har H is'secured a slotted metallic plate or bar, b, secured to the upright by meansof a screw, a, passing through said slot.
By raising or lowering the cross-.bar H, and fastening it by the sc rews c a at any desired point, the hinged har E can he placed at any angle, and consequently' support the scaffold on uneven ground exactly thesame as on level ground;
Between the standards A A is placed a frame, I, which is raised and lowered, as will be hereinafter set forth.
V The outer sides of the 'frame I are grooved for av certain distance, and lugs e e, on the inner sides of the uprights A A, lit iu said grooves.
In like manner a certain portion of the uprights is grooved, and lugson the frame i't in said grooves, and in this manner the frame I is prevented from moving sideways, but allowed to move up and down.
Another frame, J, is attached to the front side of the frame I, by means of clamps f j, as shown in iig.
3, said clamps being so formed that the frame J canslide up and down upon the former frame.
At the lower end of the frame J is a platform, K, and at the upper cud is a windlass, L.
The windlass L is, by a rope, h, connected with the lower end of the frame I, said rope passing over a pul-` ley, d, on top of the cross-har C.
Another rope, i, passes from the upper end of the" frame J, overa pulley, k, in the top oi' the-frame I. and .hangs down in front.
To work the ladders or frames, a pinfm, is put through Vthe frame J, into the frame I.- ',lh'eu the windlass is turned, winding up the rope l1, which raisesthe insideframe 1.
Then this.;.fran1e has been raised as high as possible, a spring, n., shown in iigs. 2 and 4, holds the frame in this elevated position.
The pin m is then taken-out, andthe rope fi hooked to the former rope, anch-by turning the windlass again, the frame J is raised to thetop, anda spring, p, catches and holds it, as seen in fig. 1.
Y To lower, it'is only necessary to reverse the above order.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the .hinged bar E, hinged brace G, cross-barV H, slotted bars b b, and screws a a, all substantially as and for the purposes hereinset forth.
2. The combinationaud arrangement of the bar E, brace G, bar H, slotted bars b, uprights A A, frames I J platform K, Iand windlass L, with ropes lIt t, all constructed and operated substantially as set forth.
Iu testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have liereunto set my hand, this 8th day of December, 1869. Witnesses: HENRY SWINEFORD.
SAMUEL HOSENPLUGH, JAMES BAUM.
