WINDOW-SCREEN.
Specification of Letters remit.
Patented June 6, 1911.
Application filed September 16, 1910. Serial No. 582,318.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA MoCoRMmK SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-- project out beyond the window and look in any direction without opening, removing or otherwise disturbing the screen and which effectually excludes flies, mosquitos, &c.
It has for a further object to provide a screenwhich can be easily detached from the window frame, and folded into compact form so as to occupy very little space, when it is desired to store or ship the same.
It has for a further object to provide a screen which will serve as a receptacle for plants, &c., and for airing bed linen and other articles.
.It' has for a further object to provide a screen which is the full height and width of the window and entirely covers the same so that a person can look out of the same without stooping, and not being connected in any way with the window sashes they can be adjusted at will.
It further has for its object to provide a screen which will not interfere with the window blinds, that is it will allow them to tion air and more perfect ventilation.
It still further has for its object to provide a screen having advantages in point of simple, durable and inexpensive construction which accomplishes the objects for which it is designed perfectly.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a front view of my screen showing it as it appears when in use applied to a window casing.
Fig. 2 a central vertical section on the line ww of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a rear elevation of the screen with the awning removed. Fig. 4 a bottom plan view; Figs. 5 and 6 rear and side views of the screen and awning in a folded position. Fi 7 a top plan view of the screen showing t e blinds bowed against it and tied. Fig. 8 a top plan view of screen showing the means whereby the size of the same can be enlarged.
Referring to the drawin illustrating my invention in which like re rence characters denote like parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the casing of a window provided with screw eyes 2 and 3 the window screen which is provided with two correspondingly shaped screen frames 4 and 5 hinged together at their front edges by means of hinges 7 The lower edges-6 of the frames 4 and 5 are substantially at right angles to the front and rear edges 8 and 9 respectively thereof butthe upper edges 10 slant downwardly.
A door 11 is provided in one of the side screens for use more especially when the screen is used on a window on the ground or first floor of a house to allow packages or other articles to be passed through the same without removing the screen.
The top 13 of the screen which is triangular in shape comprises two inwardly foldable triangularly shaped screen frames 14 which. are hinged together by means of hinges 15 and hinged to the top edges 10 of the side screen frames by means of hinges 16.
The bottom 17 of the screen which is triangular in shape comprises two inwardly foldable triangularly shaped screen frames 18 which are hinged together by means of hinges 19 and hinged to the lower edges of the screen frames by means of hinges 20.
For the purpose of excluding the sun and rain the screen is provided withan awning or covering 21 which is drawn closely over the two triangular shaped screen frames 14 and over the upper portions of the side screen frames 4 and 5 and is secured to the screen frames 14 and 4 and 5 by means of buttons 21 or other suitable fastening devices. The awning being in close contact with the screen when the frames of the above will help very much in keeping the screen are folded it also folds simultaneously therewith. The awning can, if desired be unbuttoned and removed before folding the screen but it is not so convenient.
From the fact that the screen covers'the entire height and width of the window casing and projects outward therefrom a person can stand at full height and look out of the window in an direction without stooping, which woul not be the case if the screen covered only a portion of the window casing and therefore this is a very importantadvantage.
For sleeping rooms, especially on warm summer nights, a screen constructed as room cool and comfortable by directing fresh air into the room and thereby providing a better ventilation.
The screen will be made to fit the various regular sized windows but should it be desired to fit it to an odd sized window where the width of the screen has to be increased a wedge shaped piece 22 can be added to one of the triangularly shaped screen frames'14. If it is desired to decrease the width of the screen one of the triangularly shaped screen frames can be planed olf sufliciently to meet the requirements.
In applying the screen to a window casing it is only necessary to place it out of the window and move the side screen frames 4 and 5 outward or away from each other which will cause the triangularly shaped screen frames 14: at the top to move downward until they are in alinement, and also cause the triangularly shaped screen frames 18 at the bottom to move upward until they are in alinement and then insert the hooks 12 in the screw eyes 2, when the screen will be ready for use.
When it is not desired to use the screen it can be easily removed and then folded by moving the side screen frames 4 and 5 inward or toward each other which will cause the triangularly shaped frames 14 and 18 at the top and bottom respectively to fold outward beyond the said side screen frames and when folded they will occupy very little room and make a compact package. The
awning foldin with the screen does not take up any ad itional space.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modificationsmay be made in the fea tures of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
What I claim is l. A window screen provided with screens hinged together, vertically and outwardly foldable screens hinged together horizontally and hinged to the first mentioned screens, said foldable screens adapted to be folded against each other beyond the said first mentioned screens, substantially as described.
2. A window screen provided with side screens hinged together and having their upper edges slanting downwardly, foldable screens hinged to the upper and lower ortions of the side screens and foldable there with, substantially as described.
3. A window screen provided with side screens hinged together, outwardly foldable screens hinged together and to the upper and lower portions of the side screens and foldable therewith, substantially as described.
4. A window screen provided with side screens hinged together, outwardly foldable screens hinged together and to the upper and; lower portions of the side screens, and an awning foldable therewith comprising a top portion covering the upper outwardly foldable screens and sides covering the up per portions of the side screens, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
