To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ELMER V. CUSHMAN and HARRY WRIGHT, of Canton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Method of Treating Leather, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the treatment of leather for the purpose of preserving it, in creasing its flexibility, and improving its appearance when finished.

The object of our invention is to produce a highly finished and durable, and flexible leather by a succession of treatments by the application of a compound in several divisions, which divisions coact in attaining the final results mentioned.

To these ends our invention consists in the method and composition substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

The leather, which may be of any kind of leather, and intended to be prepared for use in foot wear, harness, or carriage covers, is first treated with a filler compound so as to be impregnated thereby, the compound being applied while heated to a gentle degree so that the compound will be in a melted condition, the said compound being applied to the leather in any suitable manner, or by any suitable tools. This filler compound prepares the face of the leather for the re ception of the preparer compound, No. 2,

which assimilates with the filler compound, and prepares the surface to receive the polish compound, No. 3, in a manner to produce a luster, or polish, without injury to the wearing qualities of the leather. The filler compound is of a nature to occupy and protect every fiber of the leather from the deteriorating influences of foreign substances with which the leather naturally comes in contact when in use, and the said filler compound is of a nature to harmonize with the compound, No. 2, adapting the surface to receive a. high polish, after the application of the compound No. 3, the said compound, No. 3, combining with the previously applied compounds to furnish a durable and high polish which forms practically a water-proof coating.

The polish compound, No. 3, need not always be applied immediately after the application of the preceding compounds, and said compound, No. 3, may be applied repeatedly at different times by the user of the leather, at such intervals as the user may desire.

By the employment of indulin, stearic acid, and paraflin wax, we produce an indelible, water-proof, blue-black coloring, which will perfectly assimilate with the other ingredients, and which will be rendered permanent by the ap lication successively of the other compoun s. Each of the three compounds forming the divisions of the entire composition contains some of each of these three specific ingredients, so that the quantity in each compound can be comparatively small, and yet the successive application of the different compounds supplies to the leather the necessary quantity to effect the final results stated.

Although the several compounds or divisions are mixed separately, they are used successively, and their ingredients are such that they coact, by assimilating, or combining, to impart to the leather finally durability, flexibility, and a high and lasting and indelible polish. Briefly, the successive applications of the three compounds or divisions fill and then blend, and then produce a polish, the surface of the leather as finished having all of the interstices of its fibers filled with the built up and assiinilated ingredients.

We claim The method of treating leather consisting in applying a composition thereto in three divisions applied successively, the first division containing linseed oil, beeswax, indulin, stearic acid, and parafiin wax, and applied while under the influence of heat, each of the other two divisions containing indulin, stearic acid and paraffin Wax.
