Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW LINDs'rRoM, citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Squares and Bevels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to measuring instruments, and has particular reference to a combined square and bevel.
An object of this invention is to so form an instrument of this nature that it may be used not only as a square and bevel, with leveling attachment, but also as a compass and dividers.
This invention comprehends an instrument of this character which is provided with an adjustable blade adapted to be. secured in various angles relative to the stock, and which can be projected longitudinally from the stock to accommodate the device to the work to which it is applied.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the im proved measuring instrument. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through one end of the instrument showing the centering device. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the instrument on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates the stock which is recessed or cut away in its opposite sides to form a reduced port-ion or web 11. The web 11 is apertured adjacent its opposite ends for the reception of a pair of spirit tubes 12 and 13 which are oppositely mounted within the stock. The stock 10 is provided at one end with a recess 14 forming a forked end for the stock and within which are disposed a pair of companion disks 15 and 16. The disks 15 and 16 are provided with registering depressions extending from the central portions of the disks to one side thereof to slidably receive an adjustable blade 17. The disk 16 is provided with a tongue 18 projecting from the inner face of the disk and within the indentation to engage within a longitudinal groove 19 formed in one side of the blade 17. The tongue 18 is adapted to retain the blade 17 from detachment from the c0mpanion disks 15 and 16. The stock 10 is rounded at its forked-end to register with the disks 15 and 16 and is provided with a transverse bolt 20 for rotatably supporting the disks. The bolt 20 carries a thumb-nut 21 upon its outer end engaging against one side of the stock 10 for binding the fork sect-ions of the stock 10 against the outer faces of the disks.
The stock 10 is provided with a channel or pocket 22 in its lower edge communicating at its outer end with the recess 14 and adapted to -receive the lower end of the blade 17. The blade 17 is provided with openings 23 in its opposite ends for the reception of a marking instrument during the use of the device.
Thebolt 20 is provided with a central bore 2 1 through which extends a centerer 25. The centerer 25 is in the form of a relatively thin stein which is pointed at one end and which is enlarged and threaded at its opposite end to engage in the correspondingly threaded outer end of the bolt 20. The centerer 25 carries a head 26 to receive the fingers of the operator in turning the centerer 25. The head 26 extends into the central opening in the thumb-nut 21.
The disks 15 and 16 are held from rotation with respect to one another by the provision of a stud 27 engaging in threaded relation in the inner face of the disk 15 and fitting snugly into a correspondingly formed opening in the inner face of the opposite disk. The inner end of the stock 10 carries a fixed blade 28 which is seated therein to space the outer edge-of the blade 28 from the extremity of the stock so as to disclose the usual scale marked thereon. The blade 17 is limited in its movement within the channel or pocket 22 by a stop 29 in the form of a set-screw engaging through the inner wall of the channel 22 and having its head within one of the recesses in the web 11. The stop 29 is thus adjusted to hold the blade in such position that at all times the outer edge of the blade will lie flush with the lower edge of the stock 10. From this construction it will be apparent that the blade 17 may be swung into various angles about the bolt 20 by releasing the thumb-nut 21 and turning the disks 15 and 16. The stock 10 is provided with an indicating line 30 upon its upper face and across the fork section thereof adapted for registration with a circular scale of degrees 31 marked upon the periphery of the disks 15 and 16 to indicate the angle at which the blade 17 is disposed.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A square including a stock having a recess in one end and a channel in its lower edge communicating with the recess, companion disks mounted for rotation in the recess in the stock and having registering indentations in their inner faces, one of the disks having an inwardly extending tongue within the indentation, an adjustable blade engaging between the disks in the indentations and having a longitudinal groove for the reception of said tongue, clamping means carried by the stock for holding the disks when adjusted, and a. fixed blade carried upon the opposite end of the stock.
2. A measuring instrument including a stock having a recess in one end, companion disks carried in the recess, an adjustable blade disposed between the companion disks, a clamping bolt engaging through the stock and the disk to rotatably support the same, said clamping bolt having acentral bore and being internally threaded at one end,
a centerer engaging through the bore and having a correspondingly threaded portion to engage therein, said centerer having a head for turning the same, and a clamping nut engaging over said clamping bolt for binding the same Within the stock and for housing the head of said centerer.
3. A square including a stock having a recess in one end and a channel in one edge communicating with the recess, a fixed blade carried in the opposite end of the stock, interlocking companion disks mounted in the stock within the recess and having registering indentations in their inner faces, one of the disks having a tongue in the indentation, a sliding blade engaging in the indentations and having a longitudinal groove in one side for the reception of the tongue, a clamping bolt disposed through the stock and the companion disks to bind the sliding blade in adjusted position, and an adjustable stop carried by the stock within the channel for engagement with the sliding blade to limit its swinging movement within the channel.
