FENDER FOR PLOWS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led May 21, 1910. Serial No. 562,667.
To all whom i may concern:
Be it known that-"I, JOHN I). ERTEL, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Rushville, in the county of Rush and State ofIndiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to fenders for cultivators and is an improvement over my pending application Sr. No. 533,571.
The object of this invention is to provide simplified means for raising the fenders into passive position when so desired.
Further objects will be apparent from'the following specification and drawings thereof in which Figure l is a side elevation of my fender for cultivator apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the means for raising and lowering the fender, and Fig. 3 isa sectional view tak-en through a plane at right angles to Fig. 2 through the same mechamsm.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, l designates the frame of the cultivator having the usual standards 2 and plo-w points 3 fastened thereto, said standards being held to the frame by castings 5. A fender 39 has a bar 38 fastened thereto, affording means for raising and lowering the fender. Supported upon the frame intermediate the brackets 4-3 is a supporting member 23 having slots 25 and 25 formed in planes at right angles to each other. Slidable v-ertically within the slot 25 is a rack bar 26, the teeth of which are in mesh with the teeth of a pinion 30 mounted upon a shaft 29 mounted in the side walls of the supporting member. A crank handle 37 is fixed to the shaft 29 and affords means for rocking the shaft to cause the rack bar to be raised and lowered. Said rack bar has laterally projecting wings 27, shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, which are adapted t0 have a vertical play in th@ S19@ 25. A series of anti-friction rollers 32 is mounted one in each of the recesses 31, formed in the supporting member and against which anti-friction rollers the edge of the rack bar is adapted to contact. Fastened to one of the wings 27 by means of the screws 27 is a clamping plate 27X against which a clamping plate 36 is held by means of a nut 40mounted upon the bolt 40. Said clamping plate 36 has a recess 37 upon its inner face adapted to receive the fender bar 3S.
The rod 35, which is fastened at one end to the crank arm 37, has its rear end pivotally connected to the crank arm 14 journaled in its lower end upon a shaft 9, mounted in a bracket 8 which is held to the frame by means of a bolt 10. An operating lever 15 is mounted upon the shaft 9 and fixed to the crank arm 14 and is provided with a pawl 22 adapted to engage the teeth of the segment 22', a hand operating rod 2l serving to release the pawl when it may be desired to cause the fender to be raised or lowered. Said shaft 9 khas an arched port-ion 12, and
-10 is an operating lever fixed to the main operating shaftl adapted to rock the same as the lever l0 is thrown in one direction or the other.
The operation of my invention will he readily understood from the foregoing as,
by the simple manipulation of the lever 15, the rack bar may be raised or lowered and with it the fender, accordingly as may be desired to have the same disposed at different elevations.
