To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Rosn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Trenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are to provide a wrench with novel means in a manner as will be hereinafter set forth whereby the movable jaw thereof can be quickly adjusted, and to provide a wrench that can be advantageously used by mechanists and other artisans for rotating nuts and bodies having flat surfaces or facets.
Other objects of the invention are to obviate the necessity of using a screw in connection with a wrench for adjusting "the movable jaw thereof, and to provide a wrench that can be easily and quickly manipulated with one hand.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the. drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the wrench showing the movable jaw in section,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the wrench, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the adjustable jaw of-the wrench.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1 rectangular in cross section and having the lower end thereof enlarged to provide an integral handle 2, the handle being approximately half the length of the shank 1. The upper end of the shank 1 is provided with an integral jaw 3 having a gripping surface 4 and the front side of the shank is provided with transverse'teeth 5. The shank 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 6, said slot extending from a point in proximity to the jaw 3 to a point intermediate the jaw 3 and the upper end of the handle 2.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is an adjustable jaw 7 having a gripping surface 8 adapted to cooperate with the gripping surface 4 of the jaw 3 in engaging oppositely disposed facets of a nut. The jaw 7 is cut away, as at 9 and the lower end thereof provided with a tooth 10 adapted to engage the teeth 5 of the shank 1'. The jaw 7 has the upper and lower ends thereof providedv withsets of straps 11 and 12, said straps being arranged in parallelism and the straps provided with openings 13, 14 and 15, the openings 13 and 15 being formed in the upper set of straps and the openings 14 in the lower set of straps. In the openings 13 are mounted transverse rivets or pins 16 employed for holding a filler block 17 between the ends of the straps 11. In the openings 14 are mounted rivets or pins 18 employed for holding the upper end of a handle 19 between the ends of the straps 12, said handle having thumb-pieces 20. In the openings 15 is mounted a transverse pin or rivet 21, and this rivet extends through the slot 6 of the shank 1. Interposed between the rear side of the shank 1 and the handle 19 is a flat spring 22 having the lower end thereof engaging the shank and the upper end fixed to the handle 19 by a rivet or pin 23.
The filler block 17 and the handle 19 are disposed at an angle relatively to the shank 1 whereby, the lower end of the handle 19 can be pressed toward the shank to shift the lower end of the jaw and remove the tooth 10 out of engagement with the teeth 5, thereby permitting of the adjustable jaw being shifted upon the shank 1. The movement of the jaw is limited by the rivet 21 within the slot 6, this rivet preventing the jaw from becoming accidentally disengaged, also serving functionally as a pivot point when the jaw is tilted. The tension of the spring 22 is sufficient to normally retain the tooth 10 in engagement with the teeth 5 of the shank 1, but it is obvious that when leverage is brought to bear upon the wrench to rotate a nut that the greater the effort the more pronounced the gripping of the tooth 10 with the teeth 5 of the shank 1. What I claim is A wrench comprising a shank having one end thereof enlarged to provide a handle, a jaw'fixed to the-opposite end of said shank, said shank having a relatively long longitudinal slot and further provided with teeth atthe front edge thereof, an adjustable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank and having the inner side thereof at its inner end beveled to provide a tooth adapted to engage 'the teeth of the shank for arresting the movement of said adjustable jaw in one direction, an outer set of straps projecting from the outer end of said jaw and beyond said shank, an inner set of straps projecting from the inner end of said jaw and beyond said shank, a filler block fixedly secured between the outer set of straps and opposing the rear edge of the shank, a handle having one end extending between and secured to the inner set of straps and opposing the rear edge of the shank, said handle projecting inwardly from the inner set of straps and having its other end provided With a thumb piece, a spring interposed between 1 set of straps and extending through the slot of the shank.
