CYRUS B. GARLINGHOUSE, OF GARPENTERSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF,
" SAMUEL F. BATEMAN, AND BYRDINE HARRIS.
Letters Patent N 99,181, dated January 25,,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-LOADERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GraUs B. Ganmxenonsn, of Oarpentcrsvillein the county of Putnam, and in the State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Hay-Rake and Loader; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and operation of the hay-raker and loader, hereinafter described.
Said device to be made of wood and iron, or any other suitable and convenient materials.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said invention, I proceed to describe it more fully, as follows:
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of said device, which is, as is there represented, set on convenient wheels, by means of which motion is given to the various parts of its machinery.
Figure 2 is a view of the sides and joint of said carrier.
Figure 3, a transverse section of the automatic cy1- inder.
Figure 4, an axial section of said automatic cylinder.
The eccentric disk D is set wit-h its centre eccentrically to the disk D, and secured by the crank h h, as represented in said drawings.
Upon this disk D are fastened the metal bars G, G, G, and G, so that they will turn a little round the pivot at it. To accommodate their motion, D is cut in the form represented in the said fig. 3.
In each of these bars, G, G, G, and G, are fastened three teeth, represented by F, F, andl of said figs. 1, 3, and 4, in the way there represented.
These teeth, as the wheel of the loader moves round and carries the cylinder with it, on account of the eccentric position of the said disk D, will constantly push out and draw in between the guides F and E, which are held in their places by being fastened to the disk D, as represented in said fig. 4, and on account of the position of the guides F and F, the teeth will move so that, as they push out, the distance between the points will constantly grow greater, and, as they draw in, it will constantly decrease. Now, when the teeth first strike the hay, they are at the greatest distance out, and as they raise the hay over the cylinder, they gradually draw in, and the distance between their points gradually diminishing, naturally narrows the breadth of the hay in them, as it comes up, so that when it reaches the carrier, it will be of a convenient breadth to be delivered into a wagon. Now, as the wagon is loaded, the joint A of the carrier may be bent so that the end 0 may be raised higher and higher until the wagon is loadec. This jointed side of the carrier is presented in detail by fig. 2, aforesaid. This loader is to be fed by a convenient rake, which is fastened on behind by means of any suitable device.
If it be desired to move the loader from place to' place, when it is not in use, the teeth may be raised up by turning the handles H H, which are attached to the cranks h h, so that they will be out of the way of, and not be liable to break on any obstruction they may meet with.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- 1. The combination of the contracting teeth 13 F, the guides F F, the bars G G G, the eccentric disk D, the crank h h, and the lever H H, when constructed, combined, and used substantially as herein set forth.
2. The contracting teeth F, hinged to the supporting-bars G, and so arranged, in relation to the guides- F, as to gradually narrow the body of hay as it is lifted from the ground to the carrier, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
In testimonythat- I claim the foregoing specification, I have hereunto set my hand, this 7th day of April, 1869.
CYRUS B. GARLINGHOUS'E.
