To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs D. CAREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trolley-Wheel- Restoring Devices; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improved automatic device for restoring trolley-wheels to their wires, the object being to provide simple, convenient and reliable means for maintaining a trolley-wheel upon its wire.
With these ends in view my invention consists in an automatic trolleyewheel restoring device having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a comparatively long roller 2 which is mounted in a yoke 3 adapted to be attached to a trolley pole 4 just below the trolley wheel 5. This roller may be mounted in the yoke in any desired manner, but for convenience the yoke is threaded at opposite ends to support inwardly projecting studs 6 upon which the roller turns. At the center of the roller is an eccentric 7, and the main body of the roller is cut away below this eccentric forming a clearance notch 8 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Starting from opposite ends of the roller are spiral grooves 9 and 10 which run onto and terminate in the eccentric portion 7 The eccentric portion of the roller increases the weight of that side of the roller so that in the normal position the eccentric will extend downward and the notch 8 open upward so as to clear the trolley wire 11. In case, however, the trolley wheel 5 slips from the wire 11, or when re placing the trolley, a portion of the roller one side of the center will catch the trolley wire. If the wire enters the groove 9 the roller will be revolved bringing the pole into line with the wire and the eccentric will depress the pole and bring the trolley wheel into engagement with the wire, and when the wire is caught by the wheel the roll will turn by gravity and the eccentric assume a downward position. If the wire is caught by the groove 10 the result will be the same as before described, so that if the trolley slips from the wire the wire will be caught by the roll on one side or the other and the trolley pole brought back into line with the wire so that the trolley wheel will catch the wlre.
By making the roll 2 hollow as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the eccentric portion so increases the weight of one side of the roll that the eccentric will drop to a lowermost position.
I claim 1. In a trolley wheel restoring device, the combination with a yoke, of a roller mounted therein, said roller formed with an eccentric central portion and a central clearance notch, a spiral groove running from opposite ends of the roller and terminating on said eccentric.
2. A trolley wheel restoring device, the combination with a yoke, means for attaching the same to a trolley pole, inwardly projecting pins in opposite ends of the yoke, a roller mounted on said pins and free to turn thereon said roller formed with a centrally arranged eccentric and with a central clearance notch, said roller also formed with spiral grooves starting from opposite ends of the roller and running inward and terminating on said eccentric.
