V IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET-GAUG-ES FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
'iIhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sap-1e I, HENRY BARTH, of Cincinnati, in the county of' Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a'certain Improvementin Drop-Guides for PiintingPresses, of which the following is aspecification. Y
Myinvention relates to an improvement in the dropguides of printing-presses, which enables their ready and accurate adjustment.
General Description with .Reference to the Drawings.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved dropguide, with portions of the contiguous parts of the press.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the guide.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section through the pinion.
Figure 4 is a transverse section, at the line XV X, (with the pinion removed.)
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the bracket.
Of the above, figs. 2 to 5, inclusive, are full size.
A is a portion ofthe frame, B ofthe feed-board, and C ofthe cylinder of a printing-press.
D is the drop-guide shaft, to which a rocking-mol tion is imparted'by usual, or any preferred means.
E is a collar or bracket, which admits of adjustment on said shaft,.and which is held to the proper position by a set-screw, F, which has a milled head, f, and a screw-threaded portion, f', adjoining thereto, and upon which plays a milied jamb-nut, G.
Between the screw-threaded portions f and f', the latter of which turns in a screw-hole of the bracket, is a cylindrical portion," f, which serves as the arbor of a cog-pinion, H, having a milled head or disk, h, by which it is turned.
I is the guide proper, which has the customary down-turned portion i, to receive the impingement of the advancing edge of the sheet of paper. This portion i, when in action, rests upon a metallic tongue, extending,r from the lower edge of the feed-board, and is, when the fingers or grippers are about' to take the sheet, raised up in the usual manner by the `rock of the guide-shaft D, to allow the sheet to pass beneath it. i
K is a longitndinal'slot in the guide-plate I, which receives a raised portion, L, of the bracket; and the saidraised portion has a circular cavity, l, to receive the pinion H, the said cavity being open at one side,
to allow the teeth of the pinion to engage those of a rack, k, upon one side of the slot K in the guide-plate. h is a iange upon the head 'of' the pinion, which .rests upon the top of the guide I.
' Operation. .Y When in use, the' bracket E is firmly fixed' to the shaft D, by means of the set-screw F, and the cguide held in place upon the bracket by the ange h', which is pressed down by the jamb-nut'G, that also assists to tighten the set-screw.
When it is desired to adjust the guide upon the bracket, the jamb-nnt is turned, so as to vraise it from the pinion-head, and the pinion may then be freely turned, and operates, through the rack' k, to give the required adjustment to the guide,the raised portieri L 'serving to keep the guide straight with the bracket.
I have describedonly those parts which are em braced in my improvement, namely, the bracket and v guide, with the adjusting and setting-mechanism; the
rock-shaft, and the remainder of the printing-press,
having the usual, or any suitable construction.`

I claim, as my inventionv l 1.'The combination, with the guide-plate I, of the rack k, pinion H, screw F f', and jamb-nut G, for ad justing said guide-plate, as herein represented and described.
2. In combination with the guide-plate I, adjustable by means of rack and pinion lc H, clamp-screw F f and jamb-nut G, as' described, the longitudinal slot K, and guide L, as and for `thepurpose set forth.
3. In combination with an adjustable bracket, E, adjusting-pinion H h h', and jainb-nut G, employed and operating substantially as herein described, the set-screw 11 ff' f'l jm', as and for t-he purposes set forth.
