LEON P. CHESLEY, OF MONTROSE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADVERTISING-SIGN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Leon P. GHE-SLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ad vertising-Signs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in advertising signs and the object in view is to produce a simple and eiiicient device of this nature comprising a rotatable flash light sign having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved advertising sign. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on line 38 of the accom- Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the standard which may be of any size or shape but, in the present instance, the same is shown as cylindrical in form and has radially disposed wings A near its lower end which are fastened to the base B and serve to prevent the device from toppling over. A cylindrical shell designated by letter C, is fastened upon said standard and a bearing member D is positioned upon the upper surface of the bottom E and in which the lower end of the rotatable shaft F is journaled, the upper end of said shaft being journaled in a bearing H which is fastened to the under edge of the sign I upon the opposite faces of which may appear any advertising material and which is illuminated by means of the electric lights K having reflectors K thereon. A motor L is positioned within said shell and forms means for imparting a rotary movement to the shaft F through the medium of the pulleys L and L Fastened to the inner surface of the shell is an angular flange N, and O desig- Specification of Letters Patent.

1 nates a rotatable member upon the circumference of which any suitable advertising material may be placed, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and which may be disclosed at the openings 0 formed in the circumference of the shell C as said member 0 is rotated. Project-ing from the inner surface of the member 0 are the lugs Q, spaced apart. An arm M is fastened to said shaft and rotates therewith and a spring M is fastened to said arm and its other end to the inner surface of the member 0 and, when under tension, is adapted to impart movement to the member 0 to bring the advertising matter appearing upon the circumference of the member opposite one or another of the sight openings 0. Fastened to the flange N is a bracket member N upon which a pivotal weighted member N is mounted, one arm of which is positioned within the paths of said lugs Q and is adapted to tilt as one or another of the lugs come in contact therewith, thereby raising the weighted end of said member and allowing an intermittent move ment to the member 0 upon which the advertising matter appears. It will be understood that the member 0 has spider arms fastened thereto which in turn are fastened to a collar which is loosely journaled upon the upright shaft F.
A rota-table cylinder R is provided with a hub R which is fastened to the shaft and rotates therewith and upon the circumference of which may appear any advertising material, such as pictures or wording of any kind.
The operation of the apparatus will be readily understood and is as follows :-M0- tion being imparted to the arm M through the medium of the motor, the shell It may be caused to rotate and will be illuminated by the lights above. Movements are im parted to the member O through the medium of the arm M and spring fastened thereto which will cause a partial rotary movement to be made to said member 0 as the arm at the end of the weighted member comes in contact with one or another of the lugs Q, thus disclosing at the various sight apertures the advertising which, may appear upon the circumference of said member O.
WVhile I have described the circumference of the cylinder as adapted to contain advertising material, the surface of said cylinder may be formed of a mirror, if desired.
hat I claim to be new is An advertising sign apparatus comprising a standard, a shell mounted thereon, a rotatable shaft mounted in the latter, a cylin- 5 drical rotatable member mounted loosely upon said shaft, an arm fixed to said shaft, a spring connecting said arm with the inner surface of said member and adapted to impart a movement to the latter, a series of 10 projections upon said member, a tilting LEON P.
