AUTQMATIG FEED-REGULJDOR FOR BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 10, 1997.
Patented May 2, Hill, seriallt'fo. 351,551.
To all whom it may concern:
Be iL-known that l, FRANK, E. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State EELVG invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fee-d- Regulators for Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic feed regulators for boilers, and hasfor its object to provide an improved construction devices of this character by fWhic-h the feed water is introduced to the boiler continuously at Whatever rate of flow may be necessary to maintain the water level in the boiler practically constant, not-Withstanding the variation be demanded of the time to time. a
The invention consists of the matters lferetical alinen'ientto form seats for a pair of connected valve plates 21 and 22, which are attached to a common stem 23. This stem extends upwardly and out through a stutting box and carries at its upper end a pis ton 25 which fits and in thewater'end 15, to which bore the steam is admitted through the pipe or passage 12, before referred to. A spring 27 is applied to the under side of the piston 25, tending to i'iormally raise it and to lift the valves 21 and off their seats so as to permit water to flow from the pump to the boiler through-tho in steam production holler lron also increased by making the upper valve plate 22 somewhat larger than the lower valve plate 21, so that the pressure of the Water upon them is not quite balanced, but tends to lirt them oft their seats and force its Way through.
inafter set forth and particularly pointed The operation of the apparatus thus deout in the appended claim and will be fully scribed is as follows :-The valve 11, which understood from the following description is preferably a needle valve or some equivac-f the construction illustrated in the accomi lent device capable of very gradual action, panying drawings, in Wl'iich the is is constructed in such manner that it is alsectional elevation of an automatic feed vva- Ways slightly open, so as to permit a conter regulator embodying my invention in stunt escape of steam from the upper part one'form. of the float chamber into the passage '12.
In said drawing, 1 designates a float chani- This steam enters the cylinder 26 and exerts her from which pipes and 3 lead to the boiler at points above and below the Water level therein. Vuithin this chamber is the l having an upwardly ex V provided with a shoulder c whit pre'terahly takes the form of a c liar which is adjustahlv clamped upon the stem. This collar 9 i i in contact with the free end of a love any fixed part, such as a. stud 9 that depends from the upper head 10 of the chamber. The 0th end of the lever is connected With the stcni'ot a valve it which controls a steam passage 12 that leads through suitable conme has to a Water supply valve 13 and a age valve 14.
he Water supply valve 13 is in the'nature oi a balanced valve and comprises a st" in end 15 and a wah end '16 connected by rods 17, or other equivalent trainee o h. T .e Water end is provided With an inlet opening 18 into which the supply pipe from the pump or water main is tapped, and. an outlet opening 19 from which a. discharge pipe leads to the boiler. are separated by a part the water valve against the action of the spring the i'inhalanced area of 32. The collar 6 on the stem of the float is so adjusted that when the Water Within the boiler is at its normal level, the upper surface or shoulder thecollar lightly en l gages the free end. of the lever T. If the l Water enters the boiler more readily than its rate of evaporation for the time being demands, a slight raising of the Water level will occur which will lift the float and oscillate the lever 7, so as to open the valve 11 still more,
Z and the pressure of the Water on and this will increase the pressure upon the piston 2:) and tend to more nearly cut oil the supply of Water to the boiler. If, on'the I other hand, the demands on. the boiler cause the water level lower slightly, the droppingof the shorlder 6 Will permit thevalve 11 to close still farther, and by decreasing i the pressure on the piston 25, permi the 1 Water valve to open and admit an additional. supply to the boiler. In this manner the Water supply is made to at all times oorre spond in.
water evaporated in: the boiler, and
The leak valve 14 is provided as a means of enabling the workings of the apparatus to be regulated -as desired, and this is accomplished by opening the valve more or less, so as to permit a greater or less leakage of steam through the valve 14:, and in this the piston 15. By adjusting the o ening of thisleak valve, whichmay be 0 any suitable form capable of close adjustment, the apparatus may atany time be set to maintain a higher or lower water level as desired, .or to maintain the same water level under diflerent conditions of steam and water pressure, as will be understood.
A. water glass 28 is shown as provided on the float chambervto enable the water level therein to be seen at any time, and a low water alarm is alsoprovided in the shape of a whistle '29, to which steam is admitted whenever, by reason of an insufficiency of water supply, the level of water becomes so low as to permit the float to drop beyond a certain point. -As herein shown, the steam passage 30 to the whistle is controlled by a valve 31 carried by a'lever 32, this lever being arranged to be depressed at such times by a collar 33 on the upper end of the valve stem. t
I claim as my invention v V In a device of the character described, a float chamber, valve, a pipe connecting the upper portion of said float chamber and the pressure chamber of said feed valve, a valve controlling the passage of steam from said float chamber to said pipe, a float in-the 'float chamber for actuating said valve, an independent leakage port in the pipe connecting the float chamber. and the pressure chamber of the float valve, and adjustable means for varying the size of said leaka e port..
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I affix my signature in presence of two subscribin witnesses, this 4 day of January, A. D. 190
