PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
Application filed March 25, 1910. Serial No. 551,489.
Tooll whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE E. Gincr-rnis'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delta, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a specification;
My invention rhlates to an improved punch.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which is frequently required by farmers and mechanics, or for household use.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appearas the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts,
as Will be hereinafter fully described and cla med.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts; Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the tool. Fig. 2 is av transverse section produced through Fig. 1, adjacent to the punch-member, said punch-member being disposed for practical use. Fig. 3 is an edge View looking toward the right-hand side of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 and 2 desig nate the two handles of the implement-,which may be of any desired tpntour that shown being preferred. At one end the member 1 terminates in a claw 3, and the like end of the other member terminates in a hammerhead 4. The two heads 3 and 4 are connected by the usual inset joint, and are united by a.
pivot-pin 5. To provide eflicient wire-cutters, the peripheries of .the hubs or joints are provided with transverse recesses (3, of which there are three in each hub, thus furnishing the ordinary form of cutter.
The opposed faces ofthe heads 3 and 4, adjacent to their outer surfaces, are pro vided with transverse griroves 7, these two grooves, when-the heads are juxtaposed, constituting a w-iretwister, and intersecting each of the grooves are two recesses 8, which constitute staple-pullers.
Adjacent to the hubs or joints of the two leyers, are'formed transverse semi-circular depressions 9 and 10, the depression 9 being transversely serrated, and these two depres sions constitute the two jaws of a small pair of pipe-tongs. '-Each of the handles is provided, adjacentto its pivotal point, with a transverse, serrated, semi-circular recess 11, 12, respectively, and these two recesses constitute the two jaws of a large pair of pipetongs.
The member 2 is provided further with a stud or boss 13 that is designed to enter a depression 14 in the member 1 and these two elements provide a rivet-set.
The essential feature of the invention resides in the provision of a novel form of leather-punch, and this embodies, as usual. the tubular punch 15 on the member 2 and a punch seat 16 on the member 1. As will be obvious, the punch 15 will be of somewhat delicate structure and in order to shield it from damage the handle 2 is provided with a recess 17 in which the punch is pivotally mounted. To hold the punch within the recess when not in use, a resilient latch 18 is secured to the handle 2 and has a lip 19 that normally engages with the punch.
The terminal of the handle 1 is beveled approximately to a sharp point to furnish a screw-driver or chisel while the like terminal of the member 2 terminates in an ordinary sliding-jaw wrench 20.
The operation and advantages of this invention will readily be understood from the foregoing description, and as will be obvi'ons the construction of the tool is sim le' and comparatively inexpensive.
I claim: I
A device of the character described comprising two pivoted handles, one of which is handle having a seat thereon facing said recess. a punch pivoted within said recess and adapted for cotiperation withsaid seat, and a resilient pivoted member adapted to over- '90 provided with a recess opening laterally therethrough and 'through the surface there of facing the opposite handle. said opposite.
hang said recess for engagement with and retention of said punch in its folded position, when not in use.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LESLIE 15., (HLCHRIST. \Vitnesses Davin GrLor-rms'r, JonN M. Harmon.
