Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON V. LELAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McClellanville, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manure-Receptacles for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to manure receptacles for vehicles, the objects of the invention being to provide a device of this character of a comparatively inexpensive and simple nature and to construct the device whereby it can be conveniently applied to the shafts in position thereon so that it will not frighten or-injure the animal.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar arts in the several views :Figure l is a etail perspective view showing my improved receptacle in its applied position. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section through the shafts showing the receptacle applied thereto, parts being in section to clearly disclose the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

The invention embodies a receptacle comprising a neck member 1 having a fixed portion 2 and a movable portion 3 which latter is disposed uppermost and formed with an upwardly and outwardly flared upper end portion on which is mounted a cushioning rim 4: which is so designed that, when engaged by the animal, it will not chafe or injure the same. The said movable portion of the neck is pivoted to the fixed portion, as shown at 5, and as illustrated, the said fixed portion is provided with companion leaf springs 6 whose free extremities are yieldingly engaged against the opposite side of the said movable portion of the neck so as to hold such movable portion substal'itially in a plane with the fixed portion. The purpose of the springs is to provide means whereby the said movable portion of the neck will be capable of movement when engaged by the animal.

Downwardly and outwardly extending legs 7 of tube form are connected with the fixed portion of the neck 1 and as illustrated, they are arranged in direct communication therewith. Each leg is provided with a hingedly mounted closure 8 on which is mounted a keeper 9 for engaging the closed bottom 10 of the leg. The said bottom 10 of each leg is provlded with a depending flange 11 against which the correspondingly formed flange 12 of a clamp 13 may be engaged, the said clamp being designed to engage the thills A so as to hold the receptacle relatively positioned thereon. Suitable removable fastenings l-loperatively connect the flanges 11 and 12 with each other to hold the clamps in their closed positions.

The construction of the device herein disclosed and described is extremely simple and is such'as will permit of its being kept in a most sanitary condition.

I claim 1. A receptacle of the character described comprising a neck havin an uppermost end portion, downwardly an outwardly extending tubes enterin into the lower portion of the neck, the said tubes having closed lower end portions, closures at the sides of the said tubes, and thill-engaging clamps carried by the'tubes. I

A receptacle comprising a neck member having a fixed lower portion and a pivotally mounted upper portion, springs bearing against the upper portion to hold the same substantiall in a plane with the ,lower portion, and t ill-engaging tubes opening at their upper ends directly into the lower portion of the neck.

3. A receptacle comprising a hollow neck member having an annular cushioning surface at its upper end, downwardly and outwardly extending legs of tube form opening at their upper ends directly into the said neck, and thill-engaging clamps carried by the legs.

4. A receptacle of the class described comprising a hollow neck member having a fixed lower portion and a movable upper portion. elastic means connecting the said fixed and movable portions'to hold them normally in a plane with each other, thin-supported legs of tube form extending from the fixedportion of the neck, and hinged closures at the sides of the said legs.
