W. H. HARRISON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 98,961, dated January 18, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONNECTIONS FORY PIPES OF MALLEABLE METAL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making peut of the same.
I, W. H. HARRISON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
have invented an Improvement in Securing lipes of Malleable Metal together, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Object of the Invention.
My invention consists of two or more pipes of `inalleable metal, attened at and near the ends, and adapted and secured to internal castings, and having countersunk openings, adapted to connecting-pipes,
' all substantially as described hereafter.
external liattened tube, prior to the upsetting ot' the latter.
General Description.
A represents part of au ordinary lap-welded tube, flattened at and near the end, on opposite sides, so as to have the sectional form represented in lig. 4, and two holes, c a, are bored, one through each {iat-tened side of the tube.
B is a hollow casting, flat on opposite sides, and munded on the opposite edges, so as to conform to and fit snugly in the interior ci' the flattened end of the tube A; and this casting Vhas holes, b b, of the same size, or nearly so, as the. holes a a in the tube, and coincidingwith the latter when the easing is titted to its place'. 1
The tube A is connected to the casting B by any vdesrednumber of bolts or rivets d d, each of which passes through a stay, e, forming part of the casting, and connecting together the opposite sides of the same.
Each hole l1 of the casting B is countersunk, so as to'form a concave edge, x, into which the metal of the tube A, at the edge of the opening, is upset, as shown in lig. 3, and the metal thus upset is countersunk, so as to form a concave edge, g. 3.
A number of tubes thus prepared, with attened ends and internal castings, may be connected together, as shown in iig. 1, where D represents the connectingpipe between two tubes A and A', this pipe being made convex at each end n1, one convex end being adapted to the concave edge y of the opening in the tube A, and the other end 'of the pipe to the concave edge of the opening in the tube A.
The desired number of tubes A and A having been arranged side by side, with intervening connecting.
pipes D, the whole are connected together by a bolt, E, passing through the pipes 1)aud through the holes in the tubes, each e'nd tube A of the series having a washer, f, adapted to the bevelled edge y of the hole in the tube.
In the present instance, the casting B projects beyond the end ofthe tube A, the projecting portion being rounded, as shown in iig. 1, and having two openings, 71. 71, in each of which is cut a screw-thread, for receiving a screw-plug. These openings possess the double advantage ofiacilitatingthe preparation of the moulds for the castings B, and of permittingready access to the tubes for cleansing-purposes.
A number of tubes may be connected together, in the manner descrlbed above, so as to form a steamboiler or'heater; and, as the j nn'etion oi' all the pipes is -by ball-and-sockct joints, (owing to the convex ends of the pipes,D, and the concave edges y of the openings in the tubes,) liberty is afforded for the free and independent contraction and expansion 'of the parts, with. out atiecting the integrity ot' the joints.
y In somelcases, the edges y of the openings in the tubes may bc simply bevelled or inclined, the ends ot' the connecting-pipes being bevelled accordingly; but I prefer, in most cases, to make the joints ot' a balland-socket character, for the reasons given above.-
C' Zaini Two or more pipes, A and A',- of malleable metal, flattened at and near the ends, and adapte-d and secured to internal castingsB, and having countersunkv openings, adapted to connecting-pipes D, all substantially as set forth. v
In testimony whereof, I have signed Iny" name to this specification, in the presence ot' two subscribing
