Be it known that I, JAMES D. Pnnnor'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Stair-Covering, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in stair covering.

The object of the present invention is to improve "the construction of stair covering, and to provide a sanitary stair covering of simple and inexpensive construction, adapted to present a smooth, neat appearance, and capable of being readily applied to steps of different thicknesses and of enabling the same to be thoroughly cleaned without removing the stair covering.

With these and other objects in view, the inventionconsists in the construction and novel combination'of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated'in the accompanying drawing, and .pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the embodlment oftlie invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the

stair covering consists of a rubber mat 1,

butvarious other floor covering materials may be employed for this purpose, and the stair covering may be of any size, shape or design. The rubber mat, which is preferably provided with a' ribbed or corrugated upper or outer face 2, has its front portion around the lower front edge of the rubber mat to form a metallic binding or casing 7 and the extreme side edge 8 of the metallic strip is partially embedded in the rubber of the mat 1, whereby the nose strip and the rubber mat are securely fastened together. The metallic nose strip, which is resilient, is adapted to be spread or contracted to fit steps of different thicknesses, and its upper side is provided at intervals with perforations 9 for the reception of fastening devices 10, such as nails or tacks, for securing the nose strip to the front of the step. The

lower side of the nose-strip is also fastened to the lower face of the projecting nose of the step by means of lower fastening dc vices 11, which pierce the metallically bound edge or portion of the rubber, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing By this construction the nose strip is firmly attached to the front edge of the step. The upper fastening devices 10 are concealed by the rubber mat, which is attached to the metallic nosestrip at the edge only,-and it is adapted to beswung upward and outward from the step'to entirely expose-the same for dusting, sweeping, or otherwise cleaning the stairs, whereby a perfectly sanitary stair covering in this instance is provided.

The mat is reinforced by a metallic strip 12, constructed of sheet metal, or other suitable material, and secured to the lower face of the mat 1 by means of tongues 13, formed integral with the reinforcing strip 12 and piercing the rubber mat and clenched against the upper face thereof. The rear reinforcing strip 12 is provided at intervals with perforationsl i for the reception of nails, or other suitable fastening'devices for securing the rear edge of the mat to the step when desired, but this is unnecessary, as the rubber 'from the step.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. A stair covering including a mat resting upon the step and having its front portion extending downwardly and inwardly to fit the projecting nose of the step, and a nose strip secured to and forming a lining for the front portion of the mat and concealed by the same, said strip being fastened at its up per portion to the projecting nose of the step and at its lower portion to the mat, whereby the mat is attached to the step at its lower end, the upper portion of the mat being free 2. a proximately U-shaped nose strip connected with the mat at the front edge thereof and arranged to embrace the projecting nose of a step and having perforations in its upper portion concealed by the mat and adapted to receive fastening means for securing the strip to the step, and a rear reinforcing strip arranged beneath the rear edge of the mat and provided with integral tongues piercing the mat and clenched against the same.

4. A stair covering including a flexible mat extending downwardly and inwardly around the projecting nose of the ste a frontinetallic strip located at and exten ing across the front end of the mat and bent around the lower or front edge of the same to form a metallic binding or casing and provided at intervals with perforations, and fastening devices located beneath the nose of the step and passing through the perforations of the front metallic strip and through the front end of the mat and securing the latter and the strip to the nose of the step and preventing the front edge of-the mat from pulling out of the metallic strip, said mat extending beyond the front strip to the rear portion of the step.
