Letters Patent No. 98,918, dated January 18, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the same. l
To all whom 'it may concern l Beitknown that I, SAMUEL W. BRUCE, of Laguardo, in the county of Wilson, and State of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Churns,'of which the following is a specification, reference `being had to the accompanying drawings. t p
-My invention consists in a novel manner of constructing and arranging a double-dasher churn. as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a vertical cross-section through 'my churn, lshowing one dasher up and the other down;
Figure 2 is a view of the same, with the position of the dashers reversed; and
Figure 3 is a bottom' plan View of the dasliers.
A is the body or barrel of the churn, constructed in the ordinary manner, and
B is its top or lid.
O is a T-shaped or headed post, secured on the lid B. l
D is a bent or elbow-lever, pivoted on the side and at one end of the standard 0. i
E is another and similar elbow-lever, at4 the other end, and on` the opposite side. of 'the standard from leverI), the lower arms of both levers extending to the middle of the head or standard, as shown.
F is a bar, connecting the upper ends of the two elbow-levers, and causing them to move together.
G is an elbow-lever, pivoted to the standard O, and havingits upper arm pivoted tolone end ofthe bar F, and its lower, or depending end, fashioned with a handle of convenient size and shape to be grasped readily.
I I are the dasher-rods or handles, of which there are two, oneon each side of the standard C, and each of which is connected to one of thelevers D and E, as
` shown in figs. l and 2.
When thus connected, it will be seen, that by operating the lever G, it, in turn, will operate the bar F and levers D E, and thus throw the dasher-rods up and down alternately.
To the lower end of each o f the dasher-rods, I attach a semicircular dasher-head, J, having a projecting or raised portion, a, which has recesses or holes b in it. These recesses I make of large diameter at their lower, but of small diameter at their upper ends, as shown,
. so that, as they are moved through the cream, it will be thoroughly agitated.
H is a double-ended spring, secured to the top side of the standard C, and upon which the bar F strikes, as the levers are operated. The object of this spring is to prevent the jar and rattle that would be caused by the bar F striking the standard, and which would also b e liable to break the parts and to wear them rapidly. l
In this manner I construct a churn, simple in construction, easy of operation, and which, by its violent agitation of the cream, produces butter in a remarkably short time.
Having thus described my invention,
1. A churn, having the post C attached toits cover, with the levers D, E, and G, pivot-ed to it and to the bar F and dasher lrandles I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
2. In combination with the post G, with the levers pivoted to it, 'as described, the spring Ii, constructed and arranged as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with the dasher-rods I, the dashers J, constructed as herein shown and. described.
. S. W. BRUGE.
