To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrrr EDWIN MARK- HAM GOOKE, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Eastgate street, in the town and county of Stafford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

It is frequently found that block heels made from a single piece of wood split at the base when being attached to the shoe. They are also liable to be split by the nails used to secure the leather top piece or tread piece.

According to this invention I make a substantially horizontal slot in the heel block from the rear almost to the front or vice versa, preferably by means of a band saw, and into the slot I insert a piece of wood of the necessary thickness having its grain running crosswise of the grain of the heel which I secure to the body of the heel by glue. Preferably I make two outs and insert two pieces, the one near the sole and the other near the tread.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a slotted heel made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the piece to be inserted. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the heel. Figs. 2 to 4 inclusive show the relative arrangement of the grain of the material. Fig. 5 shows a longitudinal, central section of the heel with its inserted pieces on the line 5-5 of Fig. 6 and Fig. 6 shows a transverse section of the same on the line 66 of Fig. 5.

Fig. 1 shows a block heel, A, 2'. 0., a heel made of -a single piece of wood formedwith two cuts or slots, a, b, the cut, a, being near the part which fits on to the shoe and the other, 7;, near the tread. Each of these slots extends from the back to near the front of the heel. Neither of them extends all the way through the heel. The piece, 0, to be inserted in the slot, at, of the heel, is made relatively thin but of a size to substantially fill the slot, being first dipped in glue or the like and then pushed in. but smaller, is inserted into the slot, I), in a similar way. When the glue is set, the pieces are trimmed to the contour of the rest of the block and the whole is finished, or it may be convenient in some cases to insert the piece, a, before the block is finally turned to the required shape. The whole would then be finished at one operation. The grain of the wooden piece, 0, runs crosswise of the grain in the heel, A, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6 and Figs. 2 and 4 show also the relative arrangement of the grain of the wood in the heel and the inserted ieee.

Such heels are very cheaply and easily made but are not liable to split and last much longer than ordinary wooden heels.

I claim 1. A block heel made from a single piece of wood having a slot cut into it extending transversely entirely across the heel and extending also partway longitudinally across the heel, and a thin piece of suitable material inserted in the slot for the purpose specified.

2. A block heel made from a single piece of wood having a slot cut in it near the sole extending across the heel and partway from rear to front, and a similar slot cut in it near the tread, and two pieces of suitable material inserted in the slots and cemented therein for the purpose specified.

3. A block heel having a slot cut in it extending entirely across the heel and extending also partway longitudinally across the heel, and a thin piece of wood inserted in the slot and cemented therein, the grain of which runs crosswise ofthe grain of the heel.

4. A block heel made from a single piece of wood having a slot cut in it just below its top which extends longitudinally partway across the heel and from side to side thereof,-

and a thin piece of suitable material inserted and cemented in the slot for the purpose specified.
