Application led August 9, 1907. Serial No. 387,758.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAMBERT J Bonno, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fluid-Pressure Valves, `of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
The present invention relates to fluid pressure valves, and particularly to that type of such valves in which the valve member is moved in one direction from a neutral position under one operative condition and in the opposite direction from a neutral position under another operative condition.
The object of the present invention is the production of a simple and effective construction in which a valve of the type just described is' combined with means automatically tending to hold the valve in a neutral position and return it to that position when it has been moved in either direction from such neutral position.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of my invention, however, `reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which I have illustrated and described one of the forms in which my invention may be embodied.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional plan on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an exploded perspective view showing parts of the valve return mechanism.
In the drawings, A represents the valve 'casing proper, which is provided with a conical bearing A for the conical rotary valve B, and with four ports A2, A3, A4, and A5. The valve B is provided with two arc shaped ports B and B2. An operating handle C is secured to the upper end of the valve B. When the valve handle is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the various ports in the valve casing and valve are'all closed, but when the valve handle is moved clockwise into the lower dotted line position of Fig. 1, the valve casing ports A2 and A4 are connected through port B, and casing valves A3 and A5 are connected through valve port B2. Similarly, when the handle is moved counterclockwise into the other dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, ports A2 and A3 are connected by port B', and ports A1 and Ax6 are connected through port B2. The particular Vvalve disclosed is used for the operation of compressed air or hydraulic hoists shaped member D, and a cover member D.
The valve casing A, cover member D, and cup member D are connected together as by means of the bolts D2.
The return mechanism comprises a rotatable member E in alinement with the valve B. The upper end of the member E passes through an aperture formed for the purpose in the cover member D', and is provided with a tongue E which enters the socket B3 formed in the base end of the conical valve B. By this arrangement, relative angular movement between the members E and B is prevented, while at the same time the valve B is free to move toward and from the member E to permit the valve to properly seat itself in. its bearing, as under the action of fluid pressure admitted to the chamber formed between the lower end of the valve casing A and the cover or diaphragm member D through the port A leading from the inlet passage A2 of the valve.
The mechanism for normally holding the member E in the position in which the valve is held inthe full line position shown in Fig. 1, and for urging the member E back to this position when moved out of it in either direction, is all within the supplemental casing. This mechanism comprises a collar F surrounding the member E just below the cover member D. The collar is provided at its upper surface with a flange F provided with a series of grooves F2, in which a key F3 may be inserted. The inner end of the key F3 is adapted to engage a lug E2 formed on the member E, and the outer end of the key is adapted to engage a lug D3 formed on the under side ot the cover spring :is hooked on to one of a corresponding set of lugs G formed on the collar G. YThe collar G is provided with an upper lug ^G3 adapted to `engage the lug E3 on the member E, .and on its lower side with a lug G2 adapt-ed to engage a lug D4 on the bot- 'tom wall ofthe casing member D. It will be: observed 'that the lugs E2 and E3 on the member E so enga-ge the collars F and G "through key F3 and lug 'G3 respectively, and

Vsaid valve being rotatable 'in both directions from a neutral position to bring different sets of ports into register, a rotatable member, a coupling between said member and the valve, a spring return for said rotatable member normally tending at all times to move the member into the position corresponding to the neutral posit-ion of the valve, and a supplemental casing detachably secured to the valve casing, said member being journaled in, and it and the spring return being inclosed by, said supplemental casing.
2. In combination, a valve Vcasing having a bearing tor a rotary valve, and a plurality of valve controlledl p-orts,fa valve mounted in said bearing .and provided with ports, `said valve being rotatable in .both directions. from a neutral position to bring different sets ot.. ports into register, a rotatable member, a coupling between said member and the valve, a spring return for said rotatable member normally' tending .at all times to move the member into thefposition corre-l sponding to the neutral position of the valve, said coupling permittingmovement ofthe valve toward and away from sai-d member, and a supplemental casing detachably .se` cured to the valve'casing, said member being journal-ed in, and it .and the spring return being inclosed by, said supplemen-tal casing.
3. ln combination, a valve casing having the conical bearing A., and the inletport A2 and the foutlet `ports A3 and At-on opposite sides :of the inlet port,- the .conical valve member B mounted in said bearing-g A, .and
