Description
@stent @Wire inited tetr A. E. ROBERTS, or DES MOINES, IOWA.
Letters .Patent No. 98,801, dated January 11, 1870.
IMPROVE-.D scHooL-DESK The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
`reference being had to the accompanying4 drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a` hinge, to be used in school-desks for folding the seat backward.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use theI saine, I will now proceed to describe itsr'construction/and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Fignre 1 is a side view, and
Figure 2, a vertical sect-ion of the whole hinge.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the scat-supporting bar,
` which forms the male part of the hinge, and
Figure '4 is a side view of an iron forming the inner side of the hinge.
A represents a portion of the iron trame of my school-desk.
Projecting forward of this iron frame, and supported bythe front leg B of 'the same, is an irregular iron, C, which is cast solid with the frame A.
The upper part of this irregular iron O of the hinge is round, and made so for the convenience of the rib D, ou the iron E, both of which support the slats or board for the seat, which seat may be let down nearly horizontal when required for a seat, and lifted to a perpendicular whennot required.
The end of the iron E, which works inthe hinge, and in fact forms a part of the same, is made flat,`
with a lug, a, on each side, acting as a fulcrum, and these round lugs' or pivots a a work in holes on or at a dead centre of the two lips, G G', which hold the iron E in its place, and support -the seat when constructed.
The lip or side C of the hinge is cast separate, and
bolted to the iron frame A by the iron bolt b, which 4 holds the entire hinge together.
The lower part of the sideG" of the hinge is made so as to shoulder'on the iron frame A, to keep it from turning.
'lhe inside of both of the sides of the hinge is made hollow,'to take ina blind leather or rubber washer, i t', as seen in iig. 2, to prevent friction, and to make the hinge noiseless.
The end of'the iron E is made in such shape as to work easily in the hinge, and is shouldered at, or has bearings d and e to stop it from turning further than is desired for its proper use for a seat, and also from striking the back-board of the desk.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hinge for school-desks, when constructed as described, bythe end of the seat-supporting iron D, provided with journals, and fitting between a projection or lip, C, on the frame, and a removable lip, C', secured to the saine, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 17 th day of August, 1869.
' 4 A. E. ROBERTS.
