Description
TED @TATS PATNT @FFIQ.
GIACOMO BO'ITARO, OF GENOA, ITALY.
MANUFACTURE OF FATTY ACIDS.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, GIACOMO BOTTARO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Genoa, in the Kingdom of Italy, (whose postal address is 7, Salita Dinegro, Genoa, Italy,) chemist, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Fatty Acids, (for which I have applied for Letters Patent in the Kingdom of Italy on September 24, 1906,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a process of manufacturing fatty acids, based upon the employment of lime soaps as raw material and the object thereof is to obtain fatty acids lighter than the neutral ones.
In order to more clearly set forth the utility of the process of obtaining fatty acids in accordance with this invention, it will be said that when recovering glycerin from,
neutral fats, the same is separated either by boiling in closed vessels or by the fermentative process or by the use of Twitchells reactive into fatty acids and glycerin. Fatty acids of equal quality and color as those of the neutral fats employed for use in the manufacture of soap have never been ob tained, but by the process in accordance with this invention, on the contrary, fatty acids lighter than the neutral ones are obtained, which increases their value of at least 10%, because it is commonly known that a light soap has a greater value than a dark one. Therefore, with the process according to this invention, it overcomes the necessity of artificially whitening the soap by expensive methods, 2'. 6., the employment of closed receptacles for boiling, or by coloring through Twitchells reactive or by the proteic substances used in the fermentative process. These methods on account of the great modifications of the fats produced by the high temperature, 2'. 6., of about 200 (1, result very rarely in obtaining the object sought.
According to this invention, lime soap is decomposed into fatty acid and sulfite of lime, by means of a hot current of sulfurous Specification of Letters Patent.

anhydrid (sulfur dioxid), thereby recovering the glycerin contained in the lime soap in a concentrated solution. To the current of sulfurous anhydrid may be added a current of steam. If the current of sulfurous anhydrid and water steam should be mixed with air, the by-product obtained would be sulfate of lime instead of sulfite of lime.
Having now fully described my said invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The herein described improvement in the art of manufacturing fatty acids which consists in subjecting a lime soap as a raw material to the action of a hot current of sulfurous anhydrid.
2. The herein described improvement in the manufacture of fatty acids which consists in passing a heated current of sulfurous anhydrid through a lime soap as a raw material and in such a condition -.to decompose the same into fatty acid and sulfite of lime and to form a concentrated solution of glycerin, and separating and recovering the concentrated glycerin thus formed from the fatty acid and sulfite of lime.
3. The herein described improvement in the art of manufacturing fatty acids which consists in passing a heated current of sulfurous anhydrid and steam through a lime soap as a raw material.
t. The herein described process for manu facturing fatty acids which consists in passing a heated current of sulfurous anhydrid and steam in the presence of atmospheric air through a lime soap as a raw material and in such a condition as to decompose the same into fatty acid and sulfate of lime.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two wit nesses.
