Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 2, 1908. Serial No. 451,461.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIAN L. CoNKLIN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Winnfield, in the parish of Winn and State of Louisiana, do believe that ELIsHA M. CONKLIN, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, residing at Dodson, in the parish of Winn and State of Louisiana, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to saw sets and has for its object to provide a device of this nature by means of which a saw may be quickly and easily set and which may be adjusted to set the teeth at different slants.
Another object is to provide a guide for use in connection with saws having openings between the teeth and which may be moved out of operative position when saws not having the openings are to be set.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that modifications of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable material may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a side elevation of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. .Fig. 8 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4.--& of Fig. 2, showing a portion of the guide plate in side elevation and illustrating the slot therein. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a top plan View of a portion of the device showing a saw in position thereupon.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a body portion 5 having a downwardly directed lip 6 at its forward end, this lip being sharpened at its lower edge for engagement in a block or bench to hold the implement in the desired position thereupon.
Adjacent to the forward end of the body portion there is formed upon the upper face thereof an elongated rectangular projection 7 which is spaced rearwardly from the forward end of the body portion, the portion of the body portion between this projection and its forward end being fiat so that it may be struck with a hammer or other instrument to drive the lip 6 into a block or other body, as described above.
The body portion 5 is rectangular in cross section, and the projection 7 extends from side to side thereof. Formed in the projection 7 and opening through its upper and rearward faces there is a recess 8 which is continued downwardly into the body portion. Pivoted in the recess 8 there is a hammer 9 which extends upwardly and rearwardly out of the recess, the hammer being held yieldably at the upward limit of its movement by means of a spring 10, the ends of which are engaged in recesses in the hammer, and in the bottom of the recess 8. The hammer is provided with an upwardly extending projection 11 at its rearward end arranged to receive a blow from a suitable implement to move the hammer upon its pivot to set a saw, as will be hereinafter described.
An anvil receiving recess 12 is formed in the upper face of the body portion just rearwardly of the projection 7, and the upper face of the body portion is beveled downwardly toward the projection from a point approximately midway between the ends of the recess 12. Disposed within the recess 12 there is an anvil 13 which lies in position to receive the under face of the rearward end of the hammer thereagainst, and this anvil is beveled longitudinally upon its upper face from its center toward its ends, the bevels being at angles of different degrees to the perpendicular. Formed through the body portion and communicating with the recess 12 at one side thereof, there is a perforation 14: in which there is engaged a screw 15 which is also engaged in the anvil 13 to hold the latter in its recess.
Rearwardly of the recess 12 there is formed in the upper face of the body portion an anvil receiving recess 16 in which there is disposed an additional anvil 17 having bevels similar to those of the anvil 13 but formed at different angles, and these anvils are arranged for engagement in the recesses 12 and 16 interchangeably. A bowed strap spring 18 is secured within the recess 16 and is arranged to bear w-ithits t-Theposition of the slo t29 is such that the bowed portion against the anvil which is disposed within the recess to preventaccidental displacement of the anvil.
A longitudinal slot 19 is formed vertically through the body portion rearwardly ofth'e recessxle and extending into-the slot from one side thereof intermediate of its ends, there is an ear 20 which is spaced from the opposite side of the slot as shown at 2 1. The anvil receiving rece'ss.12 is somewhat narrower than the'slot'19, and formed in the body portion atone side of the recess 12 and opening through the upper face of the body portion, there is a passage 22 which communicates at its side adjacent to its forward end with the recess 12, and which communicates at its rearward end with the slot-19, the passage also communicatingat one side with the recess 16 throughout the entire'length thereof, and this passage lies in alinement longitudinally of the body portion with the space 21. r
Slidably disposed in the passage 22 and extendingthrough the space 21, there is a guide plate 23' having an upwa dlyextendving guide finger 24 at its forward end, andhaving a laterally extending ear -25-at its rearwardend, this ear lying in the portion of the slot 119 betweenrthe ear 20 and the rearward'end of the slot 19.
'For'med through the ears 20 and 25 and through the rearward end of the body portion arealining perforations 20', 25 and 26' respectively, the perforation 25 of the can 25 being threaded, and engaged in these alining perforations there is a feed screw 27', the threads of which are engaged with those of the perforation '25, and the feed screw is provided with a head 28 lying for; wardly of the ear 20 to prevent rearward movement. It will thus be apparent that whenthe screw is revolved, the ear 25'and therewith the guide plate 23 is moved longitudinally of the body portion, the'screw being provided with a head which lies rearward'ly of the body portion and'by which the screw may be revolved.
Thejvertical dlmension of the plate 23 is less thanthat of the passage 22, the difference between the height of the passage and that of the plate being equal to the height of the finger 24, so that the plate may lie -within the passage 22 with the upper edge of the finger flush with the upper face of the body portion, there being suflicient play of thelscrew. 27 in the openings 28 and 20' to permit-of slight vertical movement of the dinal slot 29 and engaged in this slot there is a pin 30 which has its end fixed in the forward endof the plate 23.
The plate 23 is provided with a longitubody por'tionand which extends across the passage-i22 in the portion .of the passage lyingfbetween the slot 19 and the recess. 16.
In use, the saw to be set is disposed against the upper face of the body portion with one of its teeth projecting beneath the hammer 9 and lying above the anvil disposed in the recess 12. Theanvils 13 and 17 are provided with transverse marks 32 upon their bevel portions, and the tooth may be disposed with its point above one of these lines, indicatii'i'g the lengthof the portion of the tooth which is to be bent. If the projecton 11 of the hammer. 9 be now struck with a suitable instrument the under face of the hammer will be brought into engagement with the tooth of the saw, and the latter will be b'ent'to conform with the bevel of the handle. It will of course be understood that all of the teethof the saw are bent in the usual manner. If the saw is of the type having spaces "between its teeth other than the spaces caused by the bevel of the side edges of the teeth, the guide finger 24 is engaged in these openings successively as the different teeth are set, the guide plate 23'being adjusted by means of the screw 27 to bring the guide finger 24into the correct position. When a saw is set which is not provided with the recesses mentioned the guideplate is moved to lie with its finger 24 flush with the upper face of the body portion, as mentioned above. Formed vertically through the bottoms of the recesses 12 and 16 are passages 34 through which a pin may be passed to disengage the anvils from the recesses- 1. In a. saw set,ra body portion having a recess, a saw setting anvil disposed in the recess, a hammer pivoted to the body porplate formed with a longitudinally disposed slot, and a guide finger movably arranged in the body portion, a pin rigidly secured to said body portion and projecting into said slot, a: lateral ear on said guide plate, an ear on the body portion, a feed screw threaded to the ear of the guide plate and projecting through the ear of the body portion and means for holding the hammer normally upward.
2. In a saw set, a body portion having a recess therein, a saw setting anvil disposed in the recess, an *oblong offset extension on said body portion, a hammer pivotedabove the anvil to said offset extension, a guide plate having a guide finger on one end and a lateral projecting ear on the other end and disposed for movement in said body portion, a lateral ear formed on the body portion, and a feed screw threaded to the ear of the guide plate projecting through the ear of the body portion for moving the guide finger relative to the anvil.
In a saw set, a body portion having a recess, a saw setting anvil disposed in the recess, a hammer pivoted to the body portion for operation over the anvil, a guide plate formed with a longitudinally disposed slot and having a guide finger and movably arranged in the body portion, a pin rigidly secured to said body portion and projecting into said slot, one end of the slot of said guide plate being laterally enlarged to receive the pin whereby said guide plate will fit against the bottom of the body portion with the finger thereof flush with the upper edges of the body portion and with the pin disposed in the lateral enlargement of the slot of said guide plate, a lateral ear on said guide plate, an ear on the body portion, a set screw threaded to the ear of the guide plate and projecting through the ear of the body portion, and means for holding the hammer normally upward.
