I OFICE.
HORACE ROBERTS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SKATE-HOLDING CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1911.
Application filed July 11, 1910. Serial No. 571,541.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate- IIolding Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for holding ice-skates while the same are being ground or sharpened in a grinding machine such as constitutes the subject matter of my application for Letters Patent Serial No. 544,857, filed February 19, 1910. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation of a holding clamp for engaging and holding an ice-skate while the saine is guided past a grinding wheel in the proper plane, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In -the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a plan view of the clamp, with a portion of an ice-skate in place, and with the grinding wheel supporting frame and guide rails shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2, is a detail perspective view of the clamp.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in both views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the machine base upon which is mounted the usual standard 2 in which is journaled the carrying arbor of one or more grinding wheels 3, as shown.
4 and 5 are inner and outer guide rails supported upon the machine base 1, and arranged in separated and parallel relation to each other in the vertically adjustable manner described in my aforesaid application Serial No. 544,857.
6 is the C shaped skate holding clamp, one end of which is forked to provide a pair of separated bearing prongs 7, which are adapted to straddle the runner blade of the skate and provide a bearing at each side of said runner blade for the underside of the sole plate or like part of the skate as shown. At its other end said clamp is provided with a hub portion 8 having a screw-threaded orifice for the reception of the screw-threaded end of the handled clamping rod 9.
In the practical use of the present invention the skate is firmly secured to the carrying clamp 6 by means of the screw-threaded clamping rod 9 engaging against and pressing the solo plate or like portion of the skate against the pair of bearing prongs 7 of the clamp. The blade of the skate is then placed on the inner rail 4 and the shank of the handled clamping rod 9 upon the outer rail 5, after which the face of the skate ruimer is pressed against the grinding wheel or wheels 3, and moved along the same until the proper grinding has been attained.
I-Iaving thus fully described my said invention what I claim as ynew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A holder for ice-skates during the sharpening of the runner blades thereof, comprising a head having a forked end to provide separated bearing prongs adapted for holding engagement with the sole plate of a skate at opposite sides of the runner blade thereof and away from the ruimer face of said blade, and a screw threaded rod passing through the other end of said head to engage tlie sole plate aforesaid, and provide means for guiding the holder upon suitable guide rails during the sharpening operation, as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 28th day of June 1910.
