To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT D. GARDINE'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of brushes in which the liquid is contained in the handle of the brush and is fed through the bottom of the handle to the bristles.

The invention has for its object to provide an improved brush of this kind by means of which the bristles will be effectively moistened, and thoroughly saturated by the liquid from the handle.

The invention also has for its object to provide a brush of this kind by means of which the bristles may be readily secured to or detachable from the handle. and so located thereon as to readily receive the liquid discharged from the handle.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly broken away of a brush constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view partly broken away and in section of a portion of the brush, with the bristles detached, showing the means for securing the bristles thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the bristles detached. Fig. at is an enlarged detail view showing a portion of the lower end of the handle with the bristles detached.

In carrying out the invention, the brush is constructed with a tubular handle 1, having its upper end closed with a suitable screw cap, 2, and gasket 3, to prevent leakage, and its lower end provided with a bot tom, 4:, in which is located a disk, 5, mounted therein by soldering or in any other suitable manner. said disk-5 being provided with a threaded depending portion, 6. The disk 5 is formed with a central tapering aperture, 7 which communicates with a tube, 8, having its upper end mounted in said disk 5 and projecting down through the threaded projection 6, as shown in Fig. 4. The bristles, 11, shown in Fig. 3, are mounted on the annular projection, 9, the head 8 of which abuts against the lower end of the threaded projection 6, the bristles being held on the projection 9 by means of catgut 12, cord, or other suitable material. The bristles being pressed into the annular groove between the annular ribs 10 by means of the catgut, so as to hold the bristles firmly in place on the projection 9. The projection 9 is held against the projection 6 in any suitable manner, as for instance, by means of a tapering plug 13, which is adapted to screw onto the threaded projection 6, the plug 13 being formed with a hollow cylindrical chamber 14, in which depends the projection 9, so that with the bristles fastened on the projection 9, the upper portions of the bristles are clamped between the projeetion 9 and the inner sides of the plug 14%. In this position the tube 8 extending down through the projection 9 will be in such position relative to the bristles that the liquid passing through the same will be thoroughly distributed upon the bristles. The liquid contained in the handle 1 may be permitted to pass therefrom to the bristles by means of a rod 15, which extends through the handle and is movable longitudinally to bring its lower tapering end, 16 into and out of engagement with the valve seat 7, by means of a handle, 17, connected with a screw-threaded portion, 18, at its upper end, which is adapted to turn in a socket projection, 19, on cover 9.

It will be seen that by means of this in vention, not only can the bristles be readily secured to and removed from the handle by unscrewing the plug 13, but also that the liquid will be thoroughly and eliieiently distributed to the bristles.

Having described the invention, I claim:
