The invention relates to a receptacle, and more particularly 4to the class of bottle or jars and closures'therefor.
. l The primary object of the invention isthe provision of a closure for bottles or Jars 1n which the mouth of the latter may be hermetrically sealed so as to provide HuidW tight juncture between the closure and the body of thebottle or jar, thus obviating any .pos-
' sibilit-y of'the admission of air, dampness or liquid within such body, thereby preserving the contents therein.
Another obj ect of the invention is the l'pro-4 4 vision of a j ar and closure of the characterV described, in which rubber washers or gaskets ofthe ordinary resilient type may be employed, whereby on the application of the cap or closure to the body of the jar the said washer orgasket will be compressed between the sa1ne,thus effecting a fluidy tightclosure at the mouth of the jar so as to prevent egress of the contents .thereof or ingress of foreign matters therein. Detachably fitted in the mouth of the body 5 is a closure comprising 4a. stopper body 7 which is constructed from any suitable material, although preferably made from glass, the body 7 beingy reduced for substantially one-"half of its depth to forma contracted cylindrical portion 8 with respect to its remaining portion and also to provide a bearing shoulder 9, the latter being adaptedl to contactwith the upper roundedl edge 6 of the body of the'jar when the cap or closure is inserted therein, thus limiting the insertion of the contracted portion 8 lwithin the said body 5 of the jar.`

The closure or stopper 7 in the periphery of its contracted portion S is provided with spaced annular channels or grooves 11l and 12, respectively, providing annular bearing ribs or surfaces 13 and 14, other, the bearingrib or surface 111' being of less ldiameter.. than the rib or bearing surface 13 so that when the closureV onstopper 7 is -inserted within the mouth of the body 5 of the jar, the said bearing rib 13 will frictionally contact with the interior surface or wall of thex said body so that there will not be a'ny possibility of lateral displacement ofthe said closure or stopper when engaged Also this'annular bearing sur- When contacting with the inner surface of the body of the jar will prevent the contents of the latter from leaking'into the channels or grooves 1l and 12 formed in the or stopper. Within the channelor groove 11 is seated the inner peripheral 4 edge 15 of a resilient-washer or gasket 16 so than on introducin the closure or stopper 7 within the meuh of the jar, the said washer orgasket, 16 will be compressed between the annular bearing surface 14 and the body 5 ofthe jar, thus serving as a sealing medium between the closure and the jar. Should this gasket or washer 16 be coinpressed to an excessive degree upon insert- I ing the closure-or stopper in the jaw its outer` peripheral edge 17 will be squeezed into the channel or groove'12 which latter is provided to accommodate the same. o
The stopper'or closure 7 'in the inner face of the -contracted portion is provided with a centrally located concaved recess 18 which is provided to give space for air that may exist within thebody 5'of the jar, thus the air being displaced on the insertion of the closure O15-stopper withinihennouth ofthe l Ajar. However, this, recess 18 may be dis, pensed with if deemed desirable.
In Fig. 5 there is shown a slight modification of the invention wherein the neck portion 19 of the body of a -bottle or jar is formed with an annular flange 20.spaced from the mouth edge of the neck portion andin thesaid neck portion between `the flange and the mouth edge fare provided, spaced annular grooves or channels 21 and 22,.respect'ively, the channel 21 receiving the inner peripheral edge 23 of a rubber gasket or washer 24. Between the channels or grooves 21 and 22 is an annular bearing rib 25 against which is compressed the washer l the'gasket or 4becomes compressed and folded orl gasket 24.- on the mounting of the inverted cup-shaped cap'26 upon'the neck portion of the jar, the cap 26 being provided with knurled or Toughened surfaces 27 to permit the same to be `readily applied tothe jar and removed therefrom when required. This cap 26 when applied to the neck portion 19 of the has its flanged portion engaged with the surfaces of the gasket 24.1, depressing the same between the said flanged portion of the said cap and the bearing rib 25, thus sealing the jar whereby, it may be rendered fluid tight.
On moilnting the cap 26 upon the jar, washer 24 being normally llat between it and the body of the jar so that the outer peripheral edge 28 of the washer or gasket will be squeezed into the channel or groove 22 in the neck portion 19 ofthe jar for the reason that on the spreading of the gasket or Washer its outer peripheral edge 2,84 will abut against the flange 20l directing it inwardly within the channel or groove 22, as the cap is being forced onto the jar. Thus it will be seen that when the cap is forced onto the jar, thel gasket or washer 24 will serve as a sealing medium to 'render the Jjar fluidntight therebypreserving the contents 'ofthe same.
Should the closure vor stopper become 'stuck' of the jar 1t `is only neceswithin the mouth too'l between the rounded sary to insert -a edge'of the body of the/jar andthe rim portion of the closure or stopper then by depressing thejool the stopper or closure is lift'dfom the mouth of the 'j ar.

Having thus described theinven'tion that I claim as new is 1.
