To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnno W. Borne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tliomasville, in .the county of Thomas and State of Georgia, have invented a new anduseful Advertising-Post, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved construction of advertising post and the post of the present invention is designed to be placed at suitable points along a frequented roadway and to have sides displaying advertising matter, the primary aim of the invention being to so form the post that several of the sides there of may be viewed from the road as the post is passed so that a maximum amount of advertising matter will be exposed to view upon a minimum amount of space.
Other objects and aims of the invention will be apparent from an inspection of the drawings and from the brief description which is to follow, setting forth structural details illustrated clearly in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective View, partly in section, of a post constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the upper end of the post illustrating a slight modification thereof. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a further modification. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating also a still further modification; and Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are horizontal sectional views illustrating various forms of the posts body.
In the drawings, the body of the post is illustrated as hollow, it being preferably formed of sheet metal either in an integral sheet or in several sections secured together, and in horizontal cross section this body is in the form of an elongated rhombus. At this point it may be stated that the post is given this form so that when set up in position beside a road with the long axis of its rhombus form parallel or substantially par allel to the road, advertising matter painted or printed upon its faces will be presented to View in such manner that the matter upon each face will be clearly visible to a person pasaing the post and traveling along the roa While in several forms of the invention, the body of the post is formed from several sheet metal sections secured together at their vertical edges, it will be readily understood from an inspection of those views of the drawing illustrating other forms of the invention that the said body of the post may be formed from a single sheet of material bent to the required form. One of the first mentioned forms of post body is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawings and in this form of body, the same is made up of two sheet metal sections bent to form angularly related wings indicated by the numeral 11, one edge of each wing being formed with tongues 12 and its other edge with slotted ears indicated by the numeral 13, the tongue at one edge of one section being inserted through the slot of the cars at the corre sponding edge of the other section and bent to lie against the outer face of the last mentioned section, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 and also in Fig. 5 which is a horizontal sectional view taken in a plane with certain of the lugs and ears of the sections.
The sections 11 constituting the body of the post, at their upper ends, are cut angularly and have formed integral with their said upper end edges, tongues indicated by the numeral 1 1 and disposed upon the upper end of the body of the post is a cap having synclinal wings 15 resting upon the said upper end edges of the body sections. These wings 15 are formed each with a plurality of slots 16 through which the tongues 14 are inserted, the said tongues being then bent down flat whereby'to hold the cap securely upon the posts body. In this form of the invent-ion it will be observed that each wing of the cap member 15 rests upon the upper end edge of one section 11 or in other words that the long dimension of the cap is coin cident with the long axis of the rhombus form described by the posts body in horizontal section, but in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings the cap is positioned at right angles with respect to the position assumed in Fig. 1 or in other words with its long dimension intersecting or traversing the long axis of the rhombus form described by the post in cross section. This arrangement of the cap upon the posts body is, however, a mere matter of choice and the principle of the invention remains the same in both instances. It is intended that the posts serve the purpose of a mile post as well as an advertising device and that in indicating mileage on the post, the same is to be painted or printed upon the wings of the cap, that is as regards the forms of caps illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. In Fig. 3 of the drawings, however, the outer sections of these wings are used for advertising purposes and a side panel 17 is secured across each end of the cap or in other words across the angle afforded by the wings of the cap.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. at of the drawings, the panel wings at their ends are bent down to afford depending sign panels indicated by the numeral 18 and it is upon these panels, in this form of the invention, that the mileage is to be painted or printed.
The poststructure of the present invention includes, in all of its forms, a suitable anchor which will now be specifically described. \Vithin the posts body, about the middle thereof, there is fixed a web the function of which will presently be explained and this web is formed from a sheet metal blank so cut and bent up as to afford a web portion 19, upstanding flanges 20 located at right angles with respect to the web 19 and riveted or otherwise secured to the wings of one of the body sections 11 of the post, and a slab 21 which overlaps the web 19 and is riveted or otherwise secured thereto. The angle proper comprises a rod 22 which at its lower end carries a rigid base or anchor foot 23 and at its upper end carries a long narrow slot 2st which rests against the under side of the web 19 and extends from the point of juncture of the wings of one section 11 to the point of juncture of the wings of the other section, it being understood that upward movement of the slots within the body is limited by the web 19. The rod 22 also extends through a frame 25 which is secured by rivets or bolts in the said body at the lower extremity thereof and serves to brace the rod and hold the same co-incident with with an outstanding flange 27 through which flanges are passed bolts or rivets 28, as may be desired. In the form of body shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, the same is made up from a single sheet of material bent to the form previously described, and having its vertical edge portions overlapped as at 29 and suitably secured together. In a like manner, in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the sections 30 similar to the sections 11 are provided and have their vertical edges flanged and overlapped as at 31 and secured together. In the form shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings, the sections have their vertical edges bent and interlocked as at 32.
Vhat is claimed is A post including a hollow body formed of sheet metal sections secured together at their vertical edges, a web rigidly supported in the angle of one of the sections at a point above the lower end of the body, a frame secured in the lower end of the body, a rod engaged through the frame and carrying a head at its upper end resting against the under side of the web, and an anchor base carried at the lower end of the said rod.
