Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,827, dated. July 5, 1853.

Be it known that I, J. CRoss, of New London, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of my improved hand brush; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sect-ion of the same; and Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the several parts, of which my improved brush is constructed, detached from one another.

As it seldom happens that any part of a hand brush, except the bristles, get damaged or out of order from either wear or any other cause, it has long been a desidera tum to produce a brush so constructed that the bristles could readily be attached to the handle and removed therefrom, and, when attached, can readily be tightened when they become loose and begin to fall out. To supply this desideratuin is the obj ect of my invention.

The brush represented in the accompanying drawing consists of a handle (C), bristles (D), a metallic case in two parts (A and B) in one of which the handle and in the other the bristles are fastened and they are constructed and arranged to screw together so as to unite the several parts of the brush and to admit of their being separated. The lower part (A) of the case is in the form of an inverted frustum of a hollow cone, and it holds the bristles (D) whose butts are placed within it while their tips project from its smaller end. The butts of the bristles are securely held in place by forcing a conical wedge into the middle of them from the wide end of the case (A) which has the effect of compressing the bristles tightly in the annular space between the periphery of the wedge and the inside of the ease. The Lipper edge of the lower part (A) of the case has a rabbetl (a) f0rmed on its outer periphery which has a screw thread cut on it that screws into a corresponding screw thread cut in a rabbet (b) formed on the inner periphery of the lower edge of the upper part (B) of the case, which forms a cap for the upper part. From the middle of the upper part (B) or cap of the case a tapering tube (c) projects, which forms the socket for the handle (C) which is of corresponding tapering form.

When the bristles (D) and conical wedge (E) are inserted in the lower part (A) of the case and the handle (C) in the upper part (D), the twoparts of the case are screwed together the lower end of the handle (C) meeting the wedge (E) and pushing it forcibly among the bristles and binding them so tight in the case that they cannot readily be drawn out and are in no danger of coming out during ordinary use. If the bristles should become loose by the shrinking of the conical wedge or themselves, by screwing the cap (B) and forcing the conical wedge deeper among the bristles the latter will be tightened ksufliciently if the shrinking was no-t considerable, but, if it were, then a thin piece of leather, paper, wood or other suitable substance must be interposed between the end of the handle and the conical wedge as shown in Fig. 2, and the cap (B) again screwed down until the wedge is compressed among the bristles with suilicient force to hold them. By this arrangement, cement to join the butts of the bristles and secure them to the handle as well as wrapping cord or wire are rendered unnecessary. The case (A) (B) may be made of cast malleable iron or other metal at the option of the constructor,-I prefer cast iron.

Whenever the set of bristles, from any cause, become unfit for use, they may be removed and another bundle of s'uitable size of new ones inserted in their place.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A brush consisting of a divided case to hold the handle and bristles, constructed and arranged as described, in combination with a wedge forced among the ends of the bristles within the case and tightened from time to time so as to squeeze and hold them, by screwing the two parts of the case together, substantially as specified.
