SAFETY HAT PIN. APPLICATION Hum AUG. 29, 1910.

, HELEN JONESQOF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
sArnrY HAT-PIN.
Be it known that I, HELEN JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, California, have invented anew and useful Safety Hat-Pin, of which the followin is a specification.
My ob ect is to make a hat pin having a removable head for covering the point of the pin and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed. I p
In the drawings :Figure 1 is-a perspective of a' safety hat pin embodylng the principles of my invention; one of the heads being rigid and the other head being removable. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail of a removable head .and taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, with the pin omitted. Fig. 4 is a view analogous to Fig. 3 with the pin inserted. I
Referring to the drawings in detail :The pin 1 is provided with a rigid head 2 and a removablehead 3.
The removable head 3 comprises a main body having a longitudinal here or chamher 1, there being an internal screw thread 5 at one end of the chamber, a stop shoulder 6 for the fillin at the other end of the chamber, and a funnel sha ed mouth 7 leading to the chamber. A tul ie 8 is adapted to fit in the chamber 4; a filling 9 of elastic,
sticking material, such as soft rubber is placed in the tube 8, and gripping bars 10,
11, 12 and 13 are inserted horizontally through the tube and through the filling, the bars 10 and 11 being parallel with each other and crosswise of the bars 12, and 13, and said bars being so located that the square opening 14, at the center of the filling 9 and between the bars, is smaller than the diameter of the pin 1, and said bars being of elastic material like piano wire, so that when the pin 1 is inserted through the 0 ening 7 it will be guided to the center 0 the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 29, 1910. Serial No. 579,547.
the fillin filling 9 and pass through the square openmg 14, thereby pressing or springing the Patented Jan.24, 1911.
bars 10, 11, 12 and 13 outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, and causing said bars to grip; the
in 1. The tension of the gripping bars is increased b the pressure of the filling 9 and the gripping force of the bars is increased by the stickiness or elasticity of the filling, so that the head 3 will be firmly held. in place upon the pin 1, thereby preventing the pin,1 from causing injury. The cap 15 has 'a chamber 16 which serves as an extension to the chamber 4 to receive the point of the pin 1, and a nipple 17 extends from the cap 15 into the screw threads 5.
It is obvious that the design and material of the removable head may be varied in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the appended claim- I claim:
A safety hat pin having a removable head for covering its point, said removable head comprising a main body having a longitudinal chamber, there being an internal screw thread at one end of the chamber and a stop shoulder at the other end of the chamber and a funnel shaped mouth leading to the chamber by the sto shoulder; a tube fitting in the chamber; a llin of elastic gripping material in the tube an fitti'n against the stop shoulder; a pair of yielding grippin bars inserted through the tube and throng and a second pair of yielding ipping ars inserted through the tube and through the filling cross-Wise of the first pair, the passage between the four gri pin bars being 'in alinement with the unne shaped mouth and a ca fitting said screw seat and abutting against the tube and filling. s HELEN JONES.
