Be it known that we, CLAYTON T. V1111- PLE, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of lVarren and State of New York, HERBERT A. MOODY, residing at Sandy Hill, in the county of Washington and State of New York, and Fnnnnnron M. STEVENS, residing at New York city, New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubular Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tubular lanterns and has for its object to provide an improved lantern top, a characteristic feature of which is a construction whereby the globe holder may be lifted to remove or insert the globe, by swinging the bail.
The globe holder tube fits at its lower end over the top of the globe and slides over an inner tube as a guide, said tube depending from the cap, with a. coiled spring to yieldingly hold the holder tube in position. Said tube is connected to cranks formed on the bail, so that when the bail is swung over the holder tube will be lifted. This does not require the lifting of the holder tube by some device fastened to the cap, as in other lanterns, which often results in finger burns owing to the heating of the cap.
A further feature of the invention is that the outer part of the cap engages the side tubes, which gives added rigidity to the cap.
Other important features will be apparent from the following description and accompanying drawings.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the top part of a lantern provided with the improvements. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the cylindrical body piece, or portion, of the lantern top, shaped with an outwardly extending flange 7 at the bottom, the edge of which is curled, and also notched at diametrically opposite points, as indicated at 8, and the inner ribs 9 of the air tubes 10 fit in said notches and thereby assist in holding the parts in proper relative position. The air tubes open into said body, as usual, and are joined to bosses thereon by beaded joints at 11. The cap 12 is supported above and spaced from the body by horns 13, the upper ends of the horns being rolled under the curled edge of the cap, as indicated at 14. These horns project from the upper edge of acentral guide tube 15, which is flanged out at the top as indicated at 16, and the horns extend through slots 17 produced in the inturned rim at the top of the body 6, by which means the cap, body and guide tube are supported and held in proper position without the use of solder.
The globe holder tube 18 fits at its upper end over the lower end of the guide tube and is slidable up and down thereon. The tube 18 has a shoulder 19, and a spring 20 is coiled around said tubes between said shoul der and the flange 16 at the top. The lower end of the globe holder tube made of proper size to fit over the rim of the globe 21, and is normally pressed to position by the spring 20, to hold the globe.
The ends of the bail 22 are bent to extend through eyes 23 at the upper elbows of the side tubes and project thence inwardly through the upper ends of said tubes into the space within the body 6, where the ends of the bail are cranked as indicated at 2%, and the cranks are connected by links 25 to the globe holder tube, said links being hooked at the lower ends, as indicated at 26, through slots in the opposite sides of the tube, below the shoulder 19. A spring catch 27 may be attached to one of the side tubes, to engage and hold the bail when it is swung down. The connection of the offset cranks 21 (see dotted lines Fig. 1) by links 25 to holder tube 18 by means of the hooks 26 inserted in slots in tube 1.8 is such that the bail may be thrown to one side of the lantern without moving the holder tube 18, as the links may slide down in the slots when the bail is so swung, thus economizing space in shipping or storing, but when the bail is thrown to the opposite side of the lantern the tube 18 is lifted.
The spring catch 27 may be omitted, as the bail cranks are so formed that when it is thrown down far enough for he cranks to pass the top dead center this bail will strike the lower part of the side tubes. and then the action of the spring will hold the bail down on its stop and so require no catch as the bail cannot return to a vertical position until it is lifted enough for the crank to pass back beyond the top dead center.
When it is desired to remove or insert the globe the lantern is held and the bail is swung over to the proper side and by means of the cranks 24: the holder tube 18 will be slid up on the guide tube 15, against the pressure of the spring 20, to either release the top of the globe and permit its removal or to permit its insertion.
The invention is not limited to the exactform shown, but various modifications are possible within the scope thereof, and hence no limitation in this respect is implied by reason of the special features described and shown.
l/Ve claim 1. In a lantern top, the combination of a cylindrical top body, a globe holder tube slidable up and down within said body, and a bail connected to the body and having a crank at the end, located in the space between said tube and the side wall of the body and connected to said tube to lift the same when the bail is swung down.
2. In a lantern top, the combination of a cylindrical top body, a slotted globe-holder tube slidable up and down in said body, a swinging bail extending through the body wall and having a crank at the end, a link connected to said crank and engaging in the slot, and a spring bearing on the tube and pressing the same down to engagement with the globe.
3. In a lantern top, the combination of a hollow cylindrical top body, a guide tube attached thereto at its upper end and de pending within the same, a globe holder tube slidable up and down on said guide tube and within the body, and means connected to the side of said holder tube and extending outside the body and connected to the globe holder tube to lift the latter.
4. In a lantern top, the combination of a cylindrical top body, a guide tube depending within the same, a globe holder tube slidable up and down on said guide tube, a bail connected to the body, lifting connections between the bail and the sides of the holder tube, operated by swinging the bail down, and a spring opposing lift of the holder tube.
5. In a lantern top, the combination of a cylindrical top body, air tubes joined thereto, a yielding globe-holder tube movable up and down within said body, a bail the ends of which have pivotal connections with the tubes and extend through the upper ends thereof into the body, cranks at the ends of the bail, and links connecting the cranks and the holder tube and located between said tube and the side walls of the body.
6. In a lantern top, the combination of a top body provided with slots atthe upper end, a guide tube depending within said body and having horns at the top fitting through the slots, a cap supported at the upper ends of the horns, and a globe holder tube slidable up and down on said guide tube.
