lN-VENTOR PAUL SAGI, OF TRENTON, NEWT JERSEY.
CUSPIDOR.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, :PAUL SAGI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer' and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cuspidors and has for its object to provide a device of suoli class with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for closing the mouth thereof when the cuspidor is inverted, thereby preventing the spilling of the contents of the cuspidor.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a cuspidor which shall be comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, ei'licient in its use, provided with a weight-operatedmeans in a manner as hereinafter set forth adapted to be automatically shifted to close the mouth of the cuspidor when the latter is inverted, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a cuspidor in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan. Fig. t is an elevation of the sealing member for the mouth. Figs. 5 and G are elevations of the shifting members for the sealing member, and, Fig. T is an elevation of the actuating weight and its guide rod therefor.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A denotes a receptacle provided with an opening A centrally of its top A2 and through which Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 5, 1910.

extends a depending` tube A3 which is carried by a funnel-shaped mouth piece B. Fixed to the bottom A4' of the receptacle r centrally of said bottom, is a vertically-disposed guide rod C provided at its top with a detachable knob D. The rod C extends up into the tube A3. Mounted upon the rod C is a semi-spherical sealing member F which is adapted to be shifted to partially extend into the tube A3 thereby closing the same. The member F is moved to a position to close the tube A3 when the cuspidor is tilted or shifted. The manner in which the member F is moved will be presently referred to. Mounted upon the rod C as well as being slidable thereon is an actuating weight E, which when the cuspidor is in] an upright position, is supported upon the bottom At of the receptacle A. Mounted upon the rod C and .inclosing the weight E is a housing H which when the cuspidor is in an upright position protects the weight E. When the cuspidor is tilted, the weight E is adapted to engage the housing H and shift the same on the rod C. lnterposed between the housing H or member H is a shifting member Cr for the member F. The member G is adapted to be engaged by the housing or member H when the latter is shifted. The housing or member H sliding upon the rod C will engage the member G and the latter will be moved to engage the member F whereby said member F will be shifted to partially extend in the tube A3 thereby closing it.
What I claim is:
l. A cuspidor comprising a receptacle having an opening in the top thereof, a funnelshaped mouth piece 'provided with a depending tube extending through the opening of the top of the receptacle, a rod connected to the receptacle and extending in said tube, a shiftable means mounted upon said tube and adapted when shifted in one direction to partially extend in the tube and close the same, a pair of members mounted upon the rod for shifting said means, and a weight slidably-mounted upon the rod and adapted when the cuspidor is tilted to engage one of said members thereby shifting the other of said members and said means in one direction to close the tube.
2. A cuspidor comprising a receptacle having an opening in the top thereof, a mouth piece provided With a depending tube eX- tending` through said opening, a iod fixed to the bottom of the receptacle and extending in Suid tube, shiftable means mounted upon said rod and adapted when moved in one direction to extend in said tube for closing it, and u Weight siidnbly mounted upon said rod and adapted When the ouspidor is tilted from an upright position to engage said means for Shifting it to Close said tube. 10
