To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that i, lnannns Osivnm a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest lviiddletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved mechanical movement especially adapted for use in operating barrel or tumbling churns.
The object of the invention is to provide simply constructed and efiicientmeans for revolving the churn in one direction and the churn dasher in the other direction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in longitudinal ver tical section of a churn showing this improved mechanism applied; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated a suitable churn support is shown preferably compris ing the base plate 1 having standards 2 and 3 mounted thereon between which is revolubly mounted a barrel churn 4C. The upper ends of these standards 2 and are provided with recesses as 5 for removably supporting a shaft hereinafter described.
Mounted on one end of the barrel churn and projecting therethrough is a hollow shaft 6 which is rigidly secured to the churn barrel 4: in any suitable manner being preferably provided near its inner end with a plate 7 cast integral therewith and arranged to bear against the outer face of the end of the churn l to afford an extended attaching surface therefor. This hollow shaft 6 is mounted in the recess 5 of the standard 2 and is provided on its outer end with a skeleton plate 8 preferably cast integral therewith and on which is mounted an an nular internally toothed gear 9 of any desired or suitable size for engagement by a cog wheel hereinafter described whereby the churn body 4 is revolved. A bracket 10 is secured to the outer face of the standard 2 Specification of Letters Patent.

This cog wheel 13 is preferably provided at its opposite ends with sleeves and nnent with the shaft 11 to proi extended bearing surface to cause said cog wheel to run true and whereby there will be less wear on said shaft and on he cog wheel sleeves.
The shaft 11 is preferably cast integral with a depending hanger member 16 the upper end of which is loosely mounted on a shaft 17 which extends through the hollow shaft 6. This shaft 17 is provided at its inner end within the churn bo ly with a collar 18 which fits closely around the outer face of the shaft (5 and the free end of said shaft 1'? is made angular and is preferably tapered to fit within a similarly shaped socket for; ed in one end of the dasher shaft 19 for a purpose to be described. The collar 18 fits closely over the end of the hollow shaft 6 to prevent all danger of the cream oozing through said shaft 6.
A cog wheel 20 provided with any desired number of teeth, preferably twenty-live is fastened to the outer end of the shaft 17 and meshes with the cog wheel 13 by means of which the churn dasher is revolved.
After the cog wheel 13 has been placed on the shaft 11 a collar 21 is preferably forced on said shaft on its outer end to hold the cog wheel operatively in position and against which the end of the brace 10 rests. An angular portion 22 is formed near the outer end of this shaft 11 and is designed to fit in the slot 23 in the free end of the bracket 10 to hold said shaft firmly against turning. The outer extremity of this shaft 11 is threaded to receive a thumb nut 24: which is operable to hold the bracket end firmly against the collar 21. hen the thumb nut 24 is loosened the shaft 11 may be disengaged from the bracket 10 when it is desired to remove the churn from its sup port.
The dasher shaft is provided with any suitable or desired number of blades as 26 which may be constructed in any desired I tends through a hollow stub shaft 29 secured to the outer face of the churn by any suitable means. This stub shaft 29 is designed to rest in the recess in the upper end of the standard 3 and is provided on its free end with an operating crank handle 30 by means of which the churn barrel is rotated. The spindle 28 is provided on its free end with a thinnb screw 31 which is removed when it is desired to remove the dasher from the churn.

in an operating mechanism constructed as above described one revolution of the churn barrel 4twill cause the dasher to revolve three times in the opposite direction whereby the butter will be quickly churned.
From the ten going description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction. and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the principle or sacrificing any of the advanshaft also having a skeleton frame at its other end provided with an internal gear wheel, a spindle inserted through said wheel, skeleton frame and hollow shaft and con nected to the dasher shalt, said spindle hav ing a cog wheel thereon and also provided with a hanger arranged between the gear wheel and skeleton frame, said hanger having a short shaft bent at right angles therewith and having thereon a pinion which meshes with said gear and cog wheels, a supporting bracket connected to said short shaft, and means comprising a hollow shaft supported on the opposite standard and having a handle secured to one end and secured at the other end to the churn body whereby the said body may be turned in one direction and the dasher in the opposite direction.
